Sergio Aguero has blasted Manchester City for selling Raheem Sterling to a rival club, Chelsea. The former Manchester City striker admits that he is yet to be convinced of the reason the Etihad club allowed Sterling to leave.

Since Aguero left the Etihad, Manchester City have been prosecuting their Premier League matches without a recognized no.9. The frontline striker position has been vacant. Notwithstanding, Pep Guardiola, the tiki-taka lord, maneuvered his way through with colossal success.

Most of Manchester City’s goals last season came from midfielders. The Citizens successfully defended the 2021 Premier League title with Pep Guardiola’s touch of mastery and tactical brilliance.

Ahead of the coming season, Raheem Sterling and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been top players that have exited the Etihad this summer.

Aguero Questions Manchester City’s Sterling Decision

Aguero And Sterling at Manchester City

Gabriel Jesus, Sterling, and Oleksandr were top City players before Pep Guardiola agreed to let them go.

The decision to sell Sterling to Chelsea has been met with shock by Aguero. Manchester City sold Raheem Sterling to their Premier League rivals Chelsea in a deal worth £50m.  In his six years spell with English Giants, Sergio Aguero has partnered with Sterling to bang in goals for the Etihad club. According to Aguero, the decision by Manchester City to sell Sterling to Chelsea is a strange one.

“I don’t understand the sale of Sterling. There are times they (City) make strange decisions,” Aguero said.

Sterling was one of Manchester City’s top players and has scored 131 goals in his even year’s spell with the English Champions. In the 2019-2020 Premier League season, Sterling fired in a record 31 goals for the Citizens. He has won the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup with the club.

Aguero went on to submit that Sterling’s exit from the team will not augur well for the team. According to him, Manchester City may have to pay dearly for the decision to sell the player. He also said that the new arrival Erling Haaland will need time to adjust to a tougher English Premier League football. The game against Liverpool in the Community was a true test of what may likely befall the team.

Pep Guardiola On Manchester City’s Transfer Decision

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola has previously revealed his position on Manchester City’s transfer decision this summer. According to him, the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Zinchenko, and Sterling have to leave the team due to intense competition for places in the team. He maintained that competition for a place in the starting line-up would likely make him a bench player, and benching them may be damaging to their football career.

Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez A Factor

The departure of Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling is obviously related to the arrival of key Manchester City summer signings such as Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. Whether the Citizens made a good or bad decision in the sale of Sterling, the performance of Haaland and overall exploits of the team next season will attest to this.
