15 plus 9 makes 24. That’s the number of goals shared between Bayer Munich forwards, Robert Lewandowski, and Serge Gnabry in the Champions League so far.

The duo has enjoyed the most prolific UEFA Champions League career so far. Apart from that, they have also broken Cristiano Ronaldo-Gareth Bale’s goals record. They are now the most prolific duo in the UEFA Champions League era after helping Bayern Munich to a 3-0 win in the semi-final win over Lyon.

Gnabry, who struggled during his stint in England with Arsenal and West Brom put the Bundesliga champions in cruise control with his first-half brace against Lyon in the last four to take his tournament tally to nine in nine games for the season before runaway Lewandowski put away his competition-leading 15th late on in the second interval from a great header.

Gnabry celebrates a goal against Chelsea

The record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale was 23 goals. Since the duo has now accounted for 24 of Bayern’s 42 goals in the competition so far ahead of Sunday’s final against Paris Saint-Germain, they are ahead of them. Ronaldo now plies his trade with Serie A giant, Juventus.

Bayern has even beaten Real Madrid’s record of 37 goals in the 2013/14 season when they lifted the trophy.

    How Gnabry florished with Lewandowski

Gnabry had put himself in the scheme of things when scored his first four Champions League goals of the 2019/20 season in the group stage. He nailed scored four for Bayern when they thrashed English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur 7-2 at the White Hart Lane.

He would later score a brace against another English side, Chelsea in the first leg of the last 16 before recording a goal against five-times winners, Barcelona in the 8-2 rout.

He then scored his 8th and 9ths against a Lyon side that had sent Juventus and Manchester City packing in the previous rounds.

For Lewandowski, The Polish ensured that his name is in the scoring sheets of all his nine Champions League appearances so far this term. This includes braces in against Tottenham, Olympiacos, and Chelsea, and the quickest four-goal haul in the competition’s history – against Red Star Belgrade. He is enjoying his best season in front of the goal and has emerged as the golden boot winner in the Bundesliga. He has now scored 55 goals in 46 competitive matches in 2019/20.

Lewandowski is in his most prolific season

He could have even scored more had he not been rested for Bayern’s final group encounter at home to Tottenham. This is despite the fact that this season’s competition has also been reformatted to a one-legged affair in response to the coronavirus pandemic. He could also meet Ronaldo’s record against PSG, but will the Parisiens allow the fanger man to smile twice against them?

Although he has already met Ronaldo’s mark of 15 goals across 10 successive Champions League matches in 2017/18, all he needs to do is to continue the streak in Sunday’s final.

At least if he can score one goal, he would have been able to beat one of the records for most single-season goals by one player, but Ronaldo’s 17-goal best-mark of 2013/14 is the score to beat. But no one can doubt the striker. That is why is called LewanGoalski.
