Sadio Mane proved that he is a man of principles when Liverpool was celebrating their 2022 Carabao Cup victory on Sunday, February 27, 2022. The 29-year-old Senegalese left-winger prevented his teammate, Taki Minamino from spraying champagne in the Royal Box at Wembley Stadium during the celebrations.
Recall that on Sunday, Liverpool clashed with Chelsea at the Wembley Stadium for the Carabao Cup final. After 120 minutes of football, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The match dragged into a penalty shootout. All the eleven Liverpool players on the pitch scored their spot-kicks but the goalkeeper of Chelsea, Kepa missed his. Hence, the match ended 10-11 on penalties in favor of Liverpool.
After all the Liverpool players have collected their winners’ medals, they assembled at the Royal Box at the Wembley Stadium for the celebration of the triumph.
Taki Minamino was among the first Liverpool players to arrive at the royal box. While at the box, he stretched down his hands to pick up a bottle of champagne on the ground. Sadio Mane emerged behind him and quickly urged him not to spray the champagne. Like a very obedient son, Minamino dropped the bottle and continued with the celebrations.
When it was time for all the players to spray champagne as a practice that is gradually becoming a culture in football tournaments, Sadio Mane stepped away.
Why did Sadio Mane stop Taki Minamino from spraying champagne during the Carabao Cup celebrations
Though Sadio Mane was not happy when coach Jurgen Klopp substituted him during the Carabao Cup final at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday, he happily joined the rest of the team to celebrate the victory over Chelsea.
Based on our findings, Sadio Mane prevented Taki Minamino from spraying champagne during the Carabao Cup celebrations because he is a fervent Muslim.
It is understood that a practicing Muslim is expected to do away with anything alcohol. Mane being a custodian of the religion decided to follow that rule to the core.
Aside from that, though Mane earns about £108,696-per-week at Liverpool, he does not like to live a luxurious life or a wasteful life. He prefers to spend his money on helping the needy around him, especially in his country, Senegal.
Hence, he sees spraying of champagne which could cost as high as 180 pounds per bottle in the United Kingdom as wastage and does not want to be a part of such a waste.
