The Russia and Ukraine crisis has continued to attract a series of sanctions since last week. The latest of the sanctions came from the world football governing body, FIFA.
A statement from the football body said no FIFA game would take place in Russia until the ongoing crisis between Ukraine and Russia is over.
Also, FIFA has declared that Russia’s flag would not be hoisted at Stadiums during FIFA matches. The country’s anthem will no longer be played in football games until the ongoing crisis is over.
According to FIFA, the country is not permitted to call itself Russia, the country is only permitted to call itself the ‘Football Union of Russia’.
FIFA said the football governing body would ban Russia from playing international football if the ongoing assault on Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s country does not cease.
A statement from the world football governing body said: “FIFA will continue its ongoing dialogue with the IOC, UEFA and other sports organizations to determine any additional measures or sanctions, including a potential exclusion from competitions, that shall be applied shortly should the situation not be improving rapidly.”

England and Wales banned themselves from playing against Russia
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, had declared that England would no longer have any sporting relationship with Russia due to the country’s assault on Ukraine.
The Prime Minister said on Saturday that it would be “inconceivable” for the UK to continue to have any sporting relationship with Russia amid the country’s war against Ukraine which has killed scores of people.
A statement from the English FA read: “Out of solidarity with Ukraine and to wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership, the FA can confirm that we won’t play against Russia in any international fixtures for the foreseeable future.
“This includes any potential match at any level of senior, age group, or para football.”
In the same vein, the Football Association of Wales (FAW), has described Russia’s operations in Ukraine as “atrocities”. Hence, the country will no longer have any sporting relationship to do with Putin’s country.
A statement from Wales’ FA read: “The FAW stands in solidarity with Ukraine and feels an extreme amount of sadness and shock to the recent developments in the country.
“The FAW has decided that Cymru will not play any international fixtures against Russia for the foreseeable future, at any level of the game.”
The statements from England and Wales FAs are coming less than 24 hours after Poland withdrew from the FIFA World Cup play-off against Russia scheduled to take place in Russia in March 2022.
Poland also asked the world football governing body to ban Russia from participating in FIFA games, a suggestion FIFA is already considering.
