2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Colombia 1-0 Jamaica
Colombia have continued their impressive showing at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after knocking out Jamaica at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Australia.
Catalina Usme came up clutch for Nelson Abadía’s side in the 51st minute via a curling effort which went past Rebecca Spencer in goal for Jamaica.
It was an evenly contested encounter involving two sides that showed determination and grit, but unfortunately for the Reggae girls, the side that wanted it more came out victorious.
Lorne Donalson’s ladies can take pride in the fact that they achieved history by making it into the second round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup ahead of powerhouse Brazil.
However, for Colombia their fairytale run at the FIFA Women’s World Cup continues as they progress into the quarter-final.
The Powerpuff girls have continued to show their unquenchable desire for success at the tournament and they are powered by veteran forward Catalina Usme.
Catalina Usme’s goal sends Colombia into the quarter-final
Despite not scoring until this encounter against Jamaica, she has produced impressive performances that has helped Colombia in getting to this stage.
With the way they have performed at the tournament so far, they could become the dark horses of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nelson Abadía’s side should take pride in their compactness as they play as a unit and they understand the assignment.
The possession count basically tells the full story of the game as both sides finish with 50% each.
However, Colombia had a greater number of shots with 11, while Jamaica had only 6 throughout the 90 minutes of action.
For shots on target, the Reggae girls had 2, while quarter-finalist Colombia had 3 shots on target.
All eyes turns to the quarter final involving England and Jamaica which would be played on the 12th of August 2023.
Will the Lionesses triumph over The Powerpuff girls? Only time will tell as both sides have shown grit throughout the tournament.
They would be going into that game as underdogs, given England’s pedigree in recent years.
However, we can’t put it past them to possibly produce a shocker which would definitely not come easy.
Australian referee Kate Jacewicz dished out three yellow cards throughout the 90 minutes of intense action and it was shown to Chantelle Swaby and Drew Spense of Jamaica, while Daniela Arias was also shown a yellow card in the 70th minute.
Jamaica has crashed out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the quarter-final, but not on a sad note as they fought their way through till the last minute.
2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup: France 4-0 Morocco
France comfortably dispatched tournament debutants Morocco at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia.
The Atlas Lionesses couldn’t match up to the quality of Les Blues and they were thumped in emphatic fashion.
France forward Kadidiatou Diani, who netted a hat-trick in her country’s final group stage game against Panama scored the opening goal.
The goal ensued after a nice one-two involving Karchaoui and Bacha on the right hand side.
Sakina Karchaoui sent a delightful cross from the byline and Diani was rightly positioned to head home in the 15th minute.
Fast-forward 5 minutes later, Kenza Dali doubled Havre Renard’s side advantage via an excellent shot off a square play from Kadidiatou Diani.
France were loving every bit of the action as three minutes later, they also put further daylight between themselves and Morocco.
Kadidiatou Diani was also the provider on this occasion, with Eugénie Le Sommer finishing the job.
It was a landslide victory for France as they completely strolled over the Arab nation.
Eugénie Le Sommer put the icing on the cake in the 70th minute, with a brilliant header from an enticing cross.
In spite of the annihilation, Morocco can take pride in the fact that they are the only tournament debutants that made it to the second round.
Reynard Pedros’ side also became the first Arab nation to feature at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
