    The second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final match between Real Madrid and Chelsea ended in favor of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

    The thrilling encounter recorded five massive goals from both ends as Chelsea tried to overturn the 3-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Real Madrid in the first leg of the tie but could not do it even though they came so close.

    In the mind-blowing encounter, Chelsea’s Mason Mount opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the first half to give Chelsea the spark they needed to start what almost looked like a dramatic comeback.

    Coach Thomas Tuchel and his boys followed up the opener with a second goal in the 51st minute, thanks to a powerful header from Antonio Rudiger.

    Chelsea almost sealed what would have become one the greatest comebacks in the history of European club football when Marcos Alonso scored a fantastic goal in the 64th minute but the goal was canceled for a handball offense.

    Still, Chelsea continued their quest to perform a miracle at the prestigious Santiago Bernabéu Stadium as Timo Warner scored what ought to be the winner in the 75th minute of the game.

    Fortunately for Real Madrid, coach Carlo Ancelotti decided to introduce Rodrygo who dragged Real Madrid back to the contest in the 80th minute.

    At that point, the aggregate was 4-4 which means that the game was still open for both Chelsea and Real Madrid. But until the regular 90 minutes ended, the two sides could not score the winner.

    Hence, the match’s center referee, Szymon Marciniak, ordered the game to go into extra time. In the first fifteen minutes of the extra time, Vinicius junior lifted the ball to Karim Benzema who headed in what turned out to be the winner.

    Unfortunately, the thrilling encounter ended 5-4 on aggregate and ended Chelsea’s dream of defending the UEFA Champions League title they won last season.

    The 5-4 aggregate win over Chelsea, sent coach Carlo Ancelotti and his team to the semi-final of the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League campaign. They will face either Atletico Madrid or Manchester City in the round.

    Note that City beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final match at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, April 5. The return leg comes up on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at 20:00.
