Real Madrid are the third club in a row to win the UEFA Champions League final with a lone goal after defeating Liverpool 1-0 in Paris to win their 14th Champions League title.
The Spanish La Liga giants traveled to Paris, France, to face Premier League side, Liverpool at the Stade de France on Saturday, May 28, 2022, and again, they proved that they are better than all the English clubs they have met this season.
Recall that Real Madrid defeated Chelsea in the quarter-final stage of the Champions League campaign 5-4 on aggregate. They met another English club, Manchester City, in the semi-final stage of the campaign.
Just like how the Spanish club looked lucky in the quarter-final stage, so did they look lucky in the semi-final stage as they knocked Manchester City out of the competition 6-5 on aggregate.
After scaling over Chelsea and Manchester City, fate brought them against another Premier League club, Liverpool in the final of the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League campaign.
The meeting was similar to that of the 2018 edition of the Champions League in which Liverpool and the Spanish giants clash in the final and the Spanish club came out victorious.
However, the 2022 edition of the tournament was expected to be different. Even bookmakers predicted that Liverpool would conquer Madrid due to the form of the English club this season in which they recorded three defeats in all competitions.
But Real Madrid which recorded three defeats in the Champions League campaign before the final was determined enough to extend their Champions League winning record to 14 trophies.
A 59th-minute goal from Vinícius Junior was enough to earn Real Madrid their second title of the 2021-2022 season less than two months after winning the Spanish La Liga season.
Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool tonight meant that Madrid are the third club after FC Bayern Munich and Chelsea, in the last three years, to win the Champions League title with just a goal.
Recall that in the 2019-2020 UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich, Kingsley Coman scored a 59th-minute goal which ended up becoming the only goal of the final.
While in the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City, Kai Havertz scored in the 42nd minute. The goal became the only goal of the final in favor of Chelsea.
Fortunately, Vinícius Junior’s 59th-minute goal in the 2022 edition of the tournament continued the trend of clubs winning the Champions League title by a lone goal.
