A former Premier League player has been exonerated from all charges of rape and is not expected to face further legal action.
The footballer was reportedly arrested at a five-star hotel in London, following claims from a woman he had met at a bar the night before that the unnamed footballer raped and beat her.
Following his arrest, the cops launched an investigation and kept the player for questioning in police custody.
The player, whose identity is undisclosed for legal and private reasons, denied all allegations and was granted bail pending further police investigations.
Now, the latest statement from the Met Police reveals the case has now been dropped.
“A man was arrested following an allegation of rape, he was taken into custody and bailed. The case has since been closed with no further action.’’ the statement read.
The alleged victim had reportedly gone to the hotel front desk and tearfully reported the former Premier League star. She was later taken to the Met Police Haven Suite for a statement and examination.
The accused footballer has starred for several English teams, including in the Premier League. He has also featured for his national team.
Premier League footballers that have allegedly been involved in rape cases
Footballers are no strangers to rape allegations, with big names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr also making up the list.
In this article, we will be looking at some of the names in the Premier League’s book that have been involved in rape cases. While there has been quite a number of cases regarding rape allegations against Premier League players, UK Law stipulates that the accused can only be named after there has been a reasonable prospect of conviction.
Regardless, below are some of the Premier League players to have been involved in rape cases
Mason Greenwood- Manchester United
Mason Greenwood rose through the ranks of the Manchester United system, progressing from the youth side to feature in the senior team. He was widely regarded as the next big thing to come out of Carrington.
However, his seemingly bright future became gloomy following allegations of rape and violence from his girlfriend, Harriet Robson. In January 2022, Harriet Robinson shared disturbing images on her socials, where the ex-United star could be seen and heard threatening and coercively forcing her to engage in sexual activities.
While the case has since been settled and all charges dropped, he never featured for Manchester United again and is currently plying his trade with French side Olympique de Marseille.
Benjamin Mendy – Manchester City
Former City left-back, Benjamin Mendy had a bright start to his career at the Etihad following his switch from Monaco in 2017. However, his progress in the English elite division was halted following four charges of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The charges levelled at the Frenchman saw him taken into custody and denied bail after he previously went against bail conditions.
Eight rapes, one attempted rape, and a sexual assault were the charges Mendy was subjected to during his trial at Chester Crown Court. He was found not guilty of any of the accusations on January 2023. However, he never made it back into the Pep Guardiola side, he currently plays for Olympique de Marseille in France.
Gylfi Sigurdsson- Everton
Sigurdsson had been an impressive signing for the Toffees from Swansea City. However, his gains were eroded following rape allegations levelled against him.
Everton had publicly announced that a member of their squad had been arrested on charges of child sex offence. It became clear during later days that the suspect had been Sigurdsson.
Although the Iceland International was not found guilty, he never featured for Everton again and is now playing for Iceland club, Valur.
