Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is experiencing his worst form at Arsenal since the 2020-2021 season commenced and that has sparked fears that he might receive Mesut Ozil’s treatment at the club if his form doesn’t improve.

Ozil used to be one of the most important players at Arsenal until towards the end of Unai Emery’s coaching era at the club. When Mikel Arteta took over the running of the club, people thought the fortune of the midfielder who earns £350,000-per-week would improve in terms of getting more game time, but it got worse under Arteta.

The German midfielder has been frozen out of the club completely since mid-March 2020 and he was not registered for Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squad for the 2020-2021 season.

Currently, there are reports that Ozil’s contract with Arsenal is about to be terminated and he is on the verge of joining Fenerbahce during this January transfer window.

In the case of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he ought to be the most important player at the club. He has been enjoying such a role since he joined the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2018 due to the high number of goals he scores every season.

In the summer of 2020, Arsenal decided to honor his input at the club by awarding him with a bumper 3-year contract extension which is expected to keep him at the club until 2023.

Unfortunately for the club, this season has been difficult for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that he has managed to score only 3 goals and provided just an assist in 16 Premier League games. Due to his inconsistent form, he has started to miss out on the club’s first eleven for a couple of league games.

Recently, the club’s coach, Mikel Arteta noted that Arsenal have been doing well as a team but the club is lacking in individual brilliance which ought to be the core of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the center-forward and captain of the club.

Besides the fact that he is not in form, age is not on the side of the 31-year-old Gabonese striker which means that Arsenal might not be willing to keep paying him the about £300,000-per-week he reportedly earns at the club if he is not scoring goals.

Hence, re-echoing the comment of former Chelsea star, Tony Cascarino, if Mikel Arteta does not find a way to return Aubameyang to the goalscoring machine he is known for, he might end up being another Mesut Ozil’s situation at Arsenal.

“I feel really awkward about Arsenal and talking about Aubameyang because I’m talking about a guy with an incredible goalscoring record,” Cascarino said on talkSPORT

“They’ve given him this ridiculous contract that’s so big, even though we all might go, ‘it should have been done, he’s been brilliant, he’s played such a high level of football that he’s got to be given the crown jewels’.

“[But] I’m not convinced Arsenal will keep going down this road of paying these players a wage that is way above other players at the football club.”

Arsenal’s next Premier League game is against Newcastle United scheduled for Monday, at 21:00. A win in the match could take Mikel Arteta and his boys as far as the 10th spot on the league table. They are currently occupying the 11th spot with 24 points in 18 league games.
