The restructuring at Chelsea currently seems endless as Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper, Petr Cech decided to step down from his role as the club’s Technical and Performance Advisor.
After three years of acting in the aforementioned capacity, the 40-year-old Czech republic former goalkeeper will cease to have a say on the performance of Chelsea’s squad from June 30, 2022.
Note that Petr Cech played for Chelsea as a goalkeeper between 2004 and 2015. Afterward, he joined Arsenal where he spent the last four years of his football career before he retired in 2019.
After his retirement, Cech returned to Chelsea in June 2019 as the club’s technical and performance advisor. Since then, he has been involved in identifying the kind of players the club needs and helping in convincing them to join the Premier League side.
At some point, he was included in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2020–21 season. He even made a professional appearance for Chelsea’s under-23 team in the Premier League 2.
Petr Cech was expected to be a part of the new era at Stamford Bridge under the co-ownership and chairmanship of Todd Boehly, but he decided to step aside to give room for fresh brains under the new regime.
Cech’s exit came less than a week after the departures of chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia.
“It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years”, Cech said on Monday, June 27, 2022. “With the club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside.
“I am pleased that the club is now in an excellent position with the new owners, and I am confident of its future success both on and off the pitch.”
While Todd Boehly said: “Petr is an important member of the Chelsea family. We understand his decision to step away and thank him for his contributions as an advisor and his commitment to the club and our community. We wish him the best.”
The departure of Petr Cech has added to the problems of Thomas Tuchel
Now that Petr Cech has decided to follow in the footsteps of the club’s ex-director Marina Granovskaia by exiting Chelsea, coach Thomas Tuchel is left to face more responsibilities in the coming season.
Before now, coach Tuchel heavily depended on Cech and Granovskaia in times of identifying the area in the club’s squad that needs strengthening, identifying the right players to sign, convincing the players to join, and negotiating the deal. But now, the coach will support the club’s co-owner Todd Boehly in carrying out those responsibilities.
Note that Boehly is not just the co-owner of Chelsea, he is also the club’s chairman and the interim sports director of the club in place of Granovskaia who is expected to hang around as an adviser until the end of this summer transfer window.
Hence, coach Thomas Tuchel will no longer concentrate on only his role as a coach but will play a major part in the recruitment and sales of players at the club until further notice. This could be a huge distraction for the German tactician ahead of the 2022-2023 season which will kick off on August 5, 2022.
Petr Cech, Technical and Performance Advisor, will leave his role effective 30 June.
