Chelsea could sign a new goalkeeper this window in keeping with their summer spree so far according to The Blues’ technical director Petr Cech who has also announced that all hope is not lost at the club for Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea has been linked to a number of goalkeepers this summer with Edouard Mendy being the latest one following Kepa’s woeful displays last season.
The world’s most expensive goalkeeper was dropped on numerous occasions during the season by Blues boss Frank Lampard for Willy Caballero most notably in the FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal. However, Petr Cech believes that Kepa’s career at Chelsea is not over just yet. Speaking in an interview, Cech said:
“Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable. But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful. Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now. But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”
Cech certainly has one or two things to say when it comes to manning the goalposts having been an elite shot-stopper during his time at West London. He played a crucial role in Chelsea’s trophy-laden start to the Abramovich era and was arguably the man-of-the-match in The Blues’ 2012 UEFA Champions League final triumph against this year’s winners Bayern Munich.
It is unsure whether Chelsea fans share the same stance with their legendary goalkeeper as regards patience with the current one. They would certainly expect the club to make. a move in that department as they prepare for the new Premier League season.
The club has experienced a busy transfer window so far, with the likes of Timo Werner, Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr joining the club already, while German playmaker; Kai Havertz, is poised to also sign with the Blues imminently. Should Chelsea keep faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga going forward, Petr Cech will hope that the current No.1 justifies the faith he has shown in him.
