After a chaotic second spell at Manchester United, Paul Pogba has returned to Juventus, an Italian club where he played the best football of his career, on a free transfer.
Recall that Paul Pogba first joined Manchester United on July 1, 2009, from the French Ligue 1 youth side, Le Havre when he was just 16-year-old. The Frenchman was forced to develop under the United’s youth system until his contract expired in the summer of 2012.
Since it was obvious that he could not break into the Manchester United squad then, Pogba decided to join Juventus on a free transfer on August 3, 2012.
While at Juventus, he evolved to become the most promising youngster in the world. He even won the Golden Boy award in 2013 to show how good he was then.
Between 2012 and 2016, Pogba helped Juventus to win four Serie A titles, two Italian Cups, and three Italian Super Cups.
After he scored 34 goals and provided 40 assists in 177 games in all competitions, Manchester United couldn’t wait to bring the Frenchman back to Old Trafford.
Hence, United had to pay a then world transfer record fee worth €105 million to bring him back to the Premier League on August 9, 2016.
Paul Pogba’s return to United came with a lot of promises especially after helping United to win Europa League in his first season and two league cups afterward.
Unfortunately, those three titles were all the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner could help Manchester United to win from 2016 to 2022.
In 2018, he had a face-off with the then coach of the club, Jose Mourinho which led him to lose his title as the club’s assistant captain. After that, he struggled to remain fit and didn’t enjoy the kind of form he was known for.
Despite that, when his contract with United was about to expire on June 30, 2022, the club tried to extend it but Pogba’s desire to be one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League made the negotiation difficult. Hence, he had to return to Juventus on a free transfer again.
After he sealed his deal with Juventus, Paul Pogba said: “As you can see, I’m back and I’m very happy – I can’t wait to start with you and win trophies with you. We’ll be there on the pitch in the stadium, all together.”
While a statement from Juventus read: “When we say goodbye after an intense adventure shared, there is always a glimmer of hope that we will see each other again, sooner or later.
“He left as a boy and returns as a man and a champion, but there is one thing that has not changed – the desire to write unforgettable pages of club history together once more.
“Pogba is back and we couldn’t be happier.”
