Paul Pogba has slammed Manchester United’s ‘nothing’ contract offers, claiming in his documentary, Pogmentary, that he wanted to prove himself at the club.
Pogba tried to project via the documentary that Manchester United made a ‘mistake’ by not offering him the kind of deal that he and his former agent, late Mino Raiola thought he was worth.
The aforementioned is possibly the most memorable part from the forthcoming Pogmentary, which will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on June 17 and will detail, among other things, the Frenchman’s final months at United and the decision-making process surrounding his future.
Pogba will become a free agent at the end of June, five years after becoming the world’s most expensive player after joining United from Juventus for £89 million.
Despite two proposals reported to be worth more than his current £290,000-per-week deal, the player and the club were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract.
What did Paul Pogba say?
“My thought process is to show Manchester that they made a mistake in waiting to give me a contract…and to show other clubs that Manchester had made a mistake in not offering me a contract,” Pogba said in Pogmentary.
“They absolutely want you to stay,” Raiola, who died in April after a long illness, informed him at one point. “The [contract] offer does not represent that for me”, late Raiola added.
“I told them, ‘If you want him to stay, don’t make that offer’. I will make them understand that if they really want you to stay and they want to build a project around you, this time they have to act differently and put the money on the table.”
“How can you tell a player you definitely want him and offer him nothing?” Pogba said, implying that the club was bluffing. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Pogba’s implication that two offers reportedly worth more than his previous contracts are “nothing” is unlikely to warm the hearts of United fans as he leaves the club as a free agent for the second time.
Raiola’s focus in finding a new club was on a variety of things, including what is best for the player, his family, and his career, as well as what is best for the Pogba brand and financially.
“We must try to make you feel as good as when you are with the French national team. You’re different with them. You understand? You’re another Pogba with the Manchester United team. It’s not normal,” the agent told his client.
“With the France team, you’re the real Pogba, the Pogba of Juventus, the Pogba that everyone loves. With Manchester, there’s something blocking you.”
At one point, Raiola warned Pogba that Juventus could no longer afford him and alerted him of talks with PSG and Barcelona. Real Madrid, who had been pursuing a transaction in 2018 and 2019, ultimately decided to invest in Aurelien Tchouameni.
In a scenario with little competition, Juventus is now anticipated to re-sign Pogba.
