Paris Saint-Germain have been crowned French Ligue 1 champions after AS Monaco’s loss to Lyon on Sunday, April 28.
How Paris Saint-Germain won the 2023/2024 French Ligue 1 title
The French powerhouse were confirmed 2023/2024 Ligue 1 champions on Sunday following closest title challengers Monaco’s 3-2 loss to Lyon.
Monaco’s defeat gave PSG a safe 12-point lead at the top of the League table with three games to play, which means Luis Enrique’s side are now champions for a French record-extending 12th time.
PSG could have snatched the title on Saturday, April 27, with a win at home against relegation-threatened Le Havre, but in the end, they needed a 95th-minute equalizer to secure a 3-3 draw.
However, after the game against Le Havre, coach Luis Enrique insisted his side had won the league “without any doubt”, as they were 12 points clear with only 12 points left to play for, and also bragged a far superior goal difference to that of Monaco.
They have won 10 of their 12 titles in the last 12 seasons, a record which goes to show how the Qatari takeover of the club in 2011 has ultimately transformed the club and the face of French football as a whole.
How Lyon defeated AS Monaco on Sunday, April 28
Malick Fofana scored the winner for Lyon on Sunday, with the 19-year-old slotting home from close range late on.
Monaco had taken the lead inside the opening minute in Lyon thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder’s goal, but Alexandre Lacazette equalized for the host and Said Benrahma put them ahead before the half-hour mark.
Ben Yedder struck again to bring it back to 2-2, only for substitute Malick Fofana to net a late winner for Lyon, who are still hoping to qualify for European football next season.
PSG, on the other hand, are on course for a clean sweep of trophies this campaign, with the French Cup final against Lyon to come on May 25 and the French Champions Trophy already in the bag.
Paris Saint-Germain stats
The current French Ligue 1 champions have lost just one of their 31 games in the League this season, scoring a staggering 76 goals and conceding just 29 times.
What’s next for Paris Saint-Germain?
Luis Enrique’s side will now turn their attention to winning the club’s first UEFA Champions League trophy. The French side will visit Borussia Dortmund for the first leg on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, before welcoming them back to Paris for the return fixture on Tuesday, May 7.
