Papu Gomez has been given a two-year ban by the anti-doping authorities.
The former Sevilla attacker who joined the Serie A team, Monza, this season tested positive for a banned substance after a test was carried out on November 2022, before joining his national team for the World Cup in Qatar.
According to anti-doping authorities, players are now responsible for whatever is found in their system, and the doctor’s approval is not a defense.
Sevilla were aware of the incident, and they immediately terminated Papu Gomez’s contract.
The ban may be the end of the player’s career. He is currently 35 years old and will be 37 years old at the end of the ban.
AS Monza reaction:
AS Monza had also reacted to the incident, releasing an official statement via social media saying, “AC Monza has received from FIFA, through the FIGC, notification of the first sentence of the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission against Alejandro Dario Gómez.”
“The ruling provides for a two-year disqualification from playing sports. The presence of terbutaline was found in the player’s biological samples.
“It is a drug that was taken to calm a bronchospasm crisis in October 2022, when the player was registered with Sevilla FC. AC Monza reserves the right to evaluate the next procedural steps.”
Gomez had only made two appearances for the Italian side, both as a substitute, so far this season.
