Tottenham Hotspur met with Manchester City on Saturday, November 21, in a match that was believed to be a test for Tottenham’s coach Jose Mourinho and how well he has built the London team. Luckily for the Portuguese coach, he proved his doubters wrong by leading Tottenham to a 2-0 victory at home.

The victory didn’t just show how well the coach has built the revolving team or his classical tactical prowess, the win officially confirmed Tottenham Hotspur as Premier League title contenders. This statement might sound hurriedly made based on the fact that Tottenham had just played 9 league games out of 38, but it is apparent that Jose Mourinho has finally found the key to the heart of Spurs’ team.

For instance, towards the end of the 2019-2020 season, Mourinho gave glimpses of what he can do on a good day by leading Tottenham to 6 games unbeaten run which lifted the club to the 6th spot on the league table and qualified the team for the 2020-2021 Europa League campaign.

Tottenham’s critics thought that was a fluke until the commencement of the 2020-2021 season where Mourinho led the team to 6 wins, two draws, and a loss in 9 league games. This performance has taken Tottenham to the top of the league table with 20 points and they may remain there a bit longer if Leicester City fail to win over Liverpool tonight.

Besides the fact that they were able to beat Pep Guardiola’s led Manchester City on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur convincingly humiliated Manchester United on September 4, 2020, by beating them 6-1. That was a sign that Mourinho came into this season with a big mission.

Since then, the enthusiasm of winning the Premier League title for the first time in the history of the club has never dropped as the club has enjoyed 8 games unbeaten streak so far. The only league match Jose Mourinho and his boys have failed to win this season is the match against Everton which they lost 1-0.

One interesting thing about the current set-up of Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur is that the team has become so dynamic and can switch into different patterns based on the flow of a game. This new look of Tottenham has seen the club’s forward Heung‑min Son emerge as the current top scorer of the league with 9 goals in 9 league games. While the club’s Harry Kane is currently the league’s top assists provider with 9 assists in 9 games.

The proficiency of Tottenham Hotspurs has earned the club the bragging rights of being the league’s second-highest scoring side so far this season, one goal behind Chelsea. And they are also the joint lowest conceding team in the league. They have conceded 9 goals just like Leicester City.

The fear for Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho

Though Tottenham Hotspur are having the best of the season currently, the fear is how would the team maintain the current momentum if players like Harry Kane and Heung‑min Son sustain any form of injury? The two players have been involved in almost all the goals the team scored so far this season and they are currently the top assist providers and scorers of the club. This means that they are the ones carrying the current setup of Tottenham on their shoulders.

Notwithstanding, Tottenham still has an experienced player like Gareth Bale that has been relatively unused due to fitness issues, the reliance on Kane and Son might be the undoing of Tottenham if care is not taken. Once these two players get injured, tired, or out of form, the club will be left with Jose Mourinho on the sidelines trying to create magic.

Hence, Tottenham and Jose Mourinho should start planning by signing another prolific striker during the January transfer window while they try to keep all their star players fit and happy.
