The manager of Tottenham Hotspur Jose Mourinho says “nobody put a gun on” Pep Guardiola’s head to extend his contract with Manchester City while reacting to whether Pep decided to stay at the club because of the possibility of reuniting with Lionel Messi.

After a period of uncertainty, Pep Guardiola extended his contract with City by two years on Thursday, November 19, 2020. He has been at the club since 2016 and has been expected to win the club’s first UEFA Champions League title which has not been forthcoming despite playing in three conservative quarter-final stages of the competition.

Since the Spanish tactician extended his stay at City, reports have continued to trend that the former coach of FC Barcelona decided to put pen to paper at City because the club is working on bringing Lionel Messi to Manchester City during the January transfer window or when the contract of the 33-year-old Barcelona football icon expires in June 2021.

The possibility of that happening is increasingly becoming very high as Messi has recently lamented how he is always seen as the problem of Barcelona whenever things are not going right at the club. Barcelona is currently working on keeping the 6 time Ballon d’Or winner and also elect a new club president.

Due to the political issues at the club, the Spanish giants are yet to start negotiating a new deal with Lionel Messi while Manchester City’s fans continue to dream of the possibility of having the Argentina international at their club.

When Jose Mourinho was asked to comment on this during Tottenham’s press conference ahead of the club’s Premier League match against Manchester City tomorrow, November 21, The Portuguese tactician said: “I’ve no idea”.

“The only for sure is that nobody put a gun on Pep’s head to sign the contract, so if he does that it is because he is happy to do it”, Mourinho added.

“He is happy to be there and for sure has conversations with the club’s powerful people and he knows what he will have ahead of him for the future. He has the motivation, he loves it there so if he does that it is because he is happy to do it, so I am happy for him.”

On the Tottenham Premier League game against Manchester City on Saturday, Jose Mourinho said: “The result of the game will not change anything, only three points more or three points less. And being first, second, third or fourth, fifth, or sixth in the table. But in terms of a journey, our ambition, our project, our process, it’s not going to change.”

Jose Mourinho has led Tottenham Hotspur to 5 victories, two draws, and a defeat in 8 Premier League games so far this season. They are currently sitting on the second spot on the league table with 17 points. While Pep Guardiola has led Manchester City to 3 wins, 3 draws, and a defeat so far this season. They are currently in the 10th spot with 12 points in 7 league games.
