French club Paris Saint-German have won the final domestic quadruple in the league history after overcoming Lyon on penalty shootout to claim the last Coupe de la Ligue title
After a goalless stalemate in normal and extra time, the final had to be decided by a shootout, which saw Lyon’s Bertrand Traore miss following 10 perfect penalties, leaving Pablo Sarabia to clinch a shootout win for PSG .
Olympique Lyonnais last won the League cup ln 2001, but haven’t been able to clinch the title in subsequent finals, loosing on four occasions in the final stage of the competition.
Lyon’s game play improved in extra time , but was tainted by defender Rafael’s red card after a heavy tackle on PSG forward Di Maria just at the edge of the penalty box.
The Paris club was missing its star striker Mbappe, due to an ankle ligament injury sustained in another final against Saint- Etienne, and with other injuries.
PSG injury list grew on the night as striker Mauro Icardi, full back Layvin Kurzawa and captain Thiago Silva all couldn’t complete the match as they went off due to suspected muscle injuries
The match started around 9pm local time on a very hot day with temperatures reaching 32 degree Celsius.
An open and keenly contested match saw both sides miss chances before extra time, Olympique Lyonnais goalkeeper Lopes was in great form as he made a good save to keep out a fierce long range shot from Gueye at the end of the first half, and a save from a close range header from Neymar in the 87th minute.
Paris Saint-German goalkeeper was also kept busy at his post as he made a fine save after a fine freekick from Lyon’s Maxwell Cornet towards the end of the second half.
The Coupe de la Ligue first introduced in 1994, will be retired following the lack of public interest, meaning it will no longer be possible for clubs to win a domestic quadruple .
PSG will go down in history as the last club to win a domestic quadruple, as they have already won the Ligue 1, French Cup, and Super Cup this season.
