Neymar Jr., a striker for Barcelona and a football megastar from Brazil, is currently facing charges in Spain for allegedly making an illegal transfer from Brazil Santos to Barcelona ten years ago, when the two teams competed in the FA Club World Cup.
On Monday when the trial in Barcelona gets underway, Neymar, a star for PSG, will appear in court with his parents, whose company handled the transfer’s business.
Neymar and his parents are being accused of Corporate Corruption.
Following a 2015 complaint from DIS, a Brazilian firm that had 40% of the player’s sporting rights while he was playing for Santos, investigators started looking into the transaction.
Barcelona claims the deal cost 57.1 million euros ($89.6m), while prosecutors estimate it to have cost at least 83 million euros ($130.2m).
The club claimed to have provided the Neymar family-owned company N&N 40 million euros in addition to giving Santos 17.1 million euros, of which 6.8 million euros were given to DIS.
Nine defendants, including two former Barca presidents, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as former Santos boss Odilio Rodrigues Filho, are currently on trial for corruption-related offenses.
Barcelona and the legal team that is defending Bartomeu declined to comment on the situation. A request for response from Santos was unanswered right away, while Rodrigues was not immediately reachable.
In a five-hour hearing, Fatima Cristina Bonassa said that the football player was an adult at the time of the transfer and understood what he was doing.
Neymar will have to show up in person for the trial’s first day on Monday, according to the Barcelona court.
it’s unclear if he’ll be required to remain throughout the entire hearing, which could last two weeks.
Together with Argentine footballing legend Lionel Messi and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, the transfer enabled Barcelona to assemble one of the most potent attacking units in the world.
They won the Champions League and La Liga and were infamously known as MSN. But after spending a long period playing in Lionel Messi’s shadow, Neymar left.
After a successful transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the Brazilian continues to hold the record for being the most expensive player ever purchased in football. He has had success there as well, taking home significant awards.
The intelligent footballer knows that winning the World Cup with Brazil is the only thing left to do, and he is eagerly anticipating it. He envisions himself hoisting the prestigious trophy in Qatar.
