Southampton should have had an equalizer, but Che Adam wasted an opportunity to put his team on level terms in a one-on-one situation with Newcastle.

However, Pope’s excellent goalkeeping kept the ball out of his net. Armstrong actually got the equalizer, but the goal was chalked out for handball after VAR intervention.

This is the fourth time a VAR decision will be against the Southampton side.

It was a frustrating night for the Saints after Duje Caleta-Car was sent off in the 86th minute.

The defender launched a dangerous tackle on Allan Saint-Maximin. The injury has ruled Saint Maximin out for seven days.

Newcastle remain the only team to have kept 15 clean sheets so far this season.

What Next For Newcastle and Southampton

Newcastle won’t be playing in the FA Cup after they were eliminated by Sheffield Wednesday.

They have enough time to rest and get ready for the next fixture against Southampton in the next Carabao Cup semi-final. A win will move them to the finals of the Tournament.

Southampton, on the other hand, have business to conduct in the FA Cup when they meet Blackpool on January 28, 2023.

The Southampton coach wants to ease his tenure off his neck, and a win will be the beginning of new things at the club.
