Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg stoked reactions when he allowed a glaring call for a penalty to slide during Arsenal’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg tie at the Emirates Stadium.

Goals from Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane canceled out Bukayo Saka’s lead and race the Bavarians in front.

In the second half, Thomas Tuchel and his Bayern Munich players were left fuming with Glenn Nyberg’s controversial decision not to award a penalty against Arsenal during a miscue between Gabriel Magalhaes and David Raya.

The ball was still in play when Gabriel Magalhaes mistakenly picked up a goal-kick pass from David Raya with his hands and placed it again in the goal area to take another goal-kick.

Bayern Munich players called for a penalty for the mistake but were turned down by Nyberg, who allegedly insisted the incident was a ‘kids error’ unworthy of a penalty.

Commenting on the incident ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League match with Aston Villa, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he equally noticed the chasm but added the referee made the right. the decision, using ‘common sense’ to jettison the penalty call despite appeals by Bayern Munich players.

“Yes, I did notice it, especially after when there was a certain reaction from them (Bayern players).

”I think the referees used the law. The law says to use common sense and whether you take an advantage from that situation, which there isn’t an advantage.”

After the incident, substitute Leandro Trossard scored the equaliser for Arsenal as they settled for a dramatic 2-2 draw going into the second leg in Germany.

Arsenal also staked a late claim for a penalty when Manuel Neuer appeared to have brought down Bukayo Saka in the box but Nyberg waved it off as well
