Mesut Ozil officially signs for Istanbul Basaksehir after agreeing to end his contract with fellow Turkish team Fenerbahce.
According to Basaksehir, the 33-year-old playmaker has agreed to a one-year contract with a potential extension of another year.
In January 2021, Ozil made a free transfer to Fenerbahce, where he was expected to remain under contract through 2024.
But since he was “excluded” from the team in March 2022, Ozil hasn’t played for his childhood club.
“One of the things that make life is that it is full of uncertainties,” the former Arsenal and Real Madrid player Ozil posted on social media on Wednesday.
“Our plans, desires and wishes may not always go in the direction you want them to. I wanted to achieve success by getting more chances to play in the Fenerbahce jersey, which has always been my childhood dream.
“I would like to thank the Fenerbahce community and fans for the great support they have shown me.”
After he joined Fenerbahce as a free agent in January 2021 after Arsenal terminated his contract, Ozil made 37 appearances throughout a season and a half, scoring nine goals.
“It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement,” said Fenerbahce in a statement on Wednesday.
“We wish Mesut Ozil success for the rest of his career.”
German World Cup champion Ozil claimed last month that he would “patiently wait” for his time to help his “childhood love.”
“I did not come to Fenerbahce and my homeland Turkey for a holiday,” Ozil, who has Turkish heritage, posted on Instagram on 21 June.
“Every time I sweat our glorious jersey, I have no other purpose than to contribute. I have many goals that I would like to live in Fenerbahce, my childhood love. I will not quit football until I do these things.”
Early in June, Fenerbahce replaced interim manager Ismail Kartal with Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who in his first press conference as a member of the team mentioned “the end of the Ozil era.”
What happened to Ozil?
Fenerbahce placed Ozil on indefinite vacation in March, according to a statement from the club. Although no explanation for the suspension was provided, local media reports that Ozil and coach Ismail Kartal got into a verbal altercation.
Recall that after being cut from the Premier League and Europa League rosters of Arsenal, Ozil left for Fenerbahce in January 2021.
Ozil played a key role in helping Arsene Wenger end Arsenal’s trophy drought after helping his team win the FA Cup in his first season at the Premier League club. Ozil received less playing time under Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta, Wenger’s replacements.
What did Mesut Ozil have to say regarding his suspension?
Initially, Mesut Ozil vowed to stick by Fenerbahce after being suspended from the team following a disagreement with interim manager Ismail Kartal.
Note that Ozil and his teamate Ozan Tufan we’re excluded from the roster of Turkish club Fenerbahce on March 24, 2022 as a disciplinary measure.
The ex-Arsenal midfielder responded by sharing a picture of the Turkish and Fenerbahce flags next to each other on social media.
“The main thing is Fenerbahce,” reads the caption of the photograph, which supports the team. But that couldn’t help him as he ended up joining another Turkish club, Istanbul Basaksehir this summer.
