Yann Sommer broke the records on Saturday, August 27, 2022, to deny Bayern Munich a win against Borussia Monchengladbach on Bundesliga matchday 4. It was a brilliant and incredible show of class and pedigree by the 33-year-old Switzerland international.

Sommer’s breathtaking performance enabled Borussia Monchengladbach to garner 8 points after 4 opening matches in the Bundesliga for the first time in the club’s history.

The stats were astonishing; 11 diving saves, 11 saves outside the box, 33% accurate long balls, 53% accurate passes, 1 goal conceded, 90 minutes played, and 19 good saves.

Speaking after the match, Sommer said he knew the game was going to be tough, and the defense did a good job. He noted further that one could not just defend all against Bayern Munich and that he is happy that he did his best for his team to share the spoils with the hosts

“We knew before that Bayern Munich are in top form and we have to do our best to contain them because we know it will be tough. I am happy that we were able to do so and get a point, ” he said.

Who Is Yann Sommer?

Born and raised in Morges, Switzerland, Yann Sommer is a 33-year-old Switzerland international who keeps for Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach.

Yann Sommer started his football career with FC Herrliberg from 1996 to 1997. He joined the Concordia youth team from 1997 to 2003. From 2003 to 2005, he played for the Basel youth team, where he subsequently made it to Basel U-17 and then to the senior team.

Sommer made 155 appearances for Basel with brief loans spells with Vaduz and Grasshoppers.

Sommer signed a five years contract with Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, which expired in 2019. In 2019, he signed a four years contract extension which will keep him at the club till 2023

Sommer has made a total of 69 appearances for Switzerland’s national Junior teams from U-16 to U-21. He has been capped 74 times by the Swiss senior national team.

He has won several awards, including the European U-17 Championship, Bundesliga Team of the Season, Swiss Super League, and the Swiss Super Cup.

Sommer married his wife Alina in 2019, and they have one child, Mila, who is two years old.
