PSG suffered 0-1 defeat at home against the league table toppers, Lille, which means that the power for PSG to win the league title for the 8th time in 9 seasons is no longer in the hands of the club.
Lille who had just 34 percent of the ball possession in the game on Saturday found a way to run away with the narrow margin, thanks to Jonathan David’s 20th minute goal.
PSG tried to get back into the game until one of the club’s talisman Neymar got red-carded in the 90th minute. The club’s 16 shots and three shots on target could not make any difference.
So far this season, PSG have played 31 league games in which they won 20 of the games, drew 3 times, and suffered 8 defeats. Even if they win the remaining 7 games, they would not win the Ligue 1 title except Lille lose two of their remaining 7 games.
As for Lille, they have proven to be a team to beat as the table toppers have suffered just 3 defeats in 31 league games. However, they have recorded 9 draws and just 19 victories in the league.
Mauricio Pochettino and his star-studded PSG side have been very inconsistent that they have recorded three successive defeats at Parc des Princes in their last three league games. This goes to show that the current setup of the team is very beatable which is not a good sign for the aspiration of the team.
Based on the defeat to Lille on Saturday, April 3, 2021, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that it would be tough for PSG to retain the Ligue 1 title they won last season.
Mauricio Pochettino who is expected to find a way to turn things around at the club will go head to head against Bayern Munich in the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. As the French giants are trying to win their first UEFA Champions League title, the Ligue 1 title is gradually eluding them.
“It’s going to be difficult [to win the Ligue 1 title this season],” Pochettino told PSG TV.
“We knew very well that it was going to be tough until the end and of course we need to keep going and think of all competitions. We’ve got the Champions League coming up so we’ll focus on that…
“They created fewer chances than us but they were more clinical in front of goal.
“I think we deserved more at least a point or even three. In the end, we lost and of course, we’re very disappointed with the result. We didn’t create enough. We created more than them but not enough and maybe we showed a lack of aggression in the final third.
“We were thinking that with the dominance we would score but in the end the time ran out we didn’t score and we lost the game.”
