Matthijs De Ligt of Bayern Munich is set to be sidelined for four to six months due to an injury he sustained during a match against FC Saarbrucken.
What has happened to De Ligt
The former Ajax Amsterdam defender suffered an MCL injury and was taken off in the 24th minute of the match against Saarbruecken, who defeated the reigning champions of the Bundesliga 2-1.
This had deepened the injury crisis at the Bayern Munich defense.
The bad news was revealed by the club, but they failed to mention his exact return date.
The German club said, ”Matthijs De Ligt sustained a partial tear of the ligament in his right knee joint against 1. FC Saarbrücken in the DFB-Pokal. Get well soon, Matthijs”.
The Bundesliga team will be without the player ahead of a must-win match against Borussia Dortmund.
However, the club will welcome back Dayot Upamecano as the Bayern Munich team look forward to going beyond Bayer Leverkusen, who remain unbeaten in the German Bundesliga.
The injury crisis had made Bayern Munich consider signing Jerome Boateng until the end of the season, but the deal failed to come through after heavy protests from the fans.
