After his country was eliminated from the World Cup, Germany’s captain Manuel Neuer was given “additional holiday” time, and while skiing, he shattered his leg.

Germany’s campaign in Qatar, which saw them exit the group stages for the second consecutive time, featured the 36-year-old goalkeeper.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper started all three of Germany’s group-stage games, but he was unable to maintain a perfect record as his team was shockingly eliminated early.

And after receiving further time off from Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann, the seasoned goalkeeper has revealed he has suffered an injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the campaign.

In a post on his social media page, Neuer wrote: “Hey guys, what can I say, the end of the year could have definitely gone better.

“While I was trying to get my head clear while ski touring, I suffered a lower leg fracture.

“It hurts to know that the current season is over for me.”

Before Nagelsmann extended their holiday, Bayern players who were eliminated from the group stage were expected to start training at Sabener Straße this week.

After their humiliating elimination, Neuer made the decision to go skiing to decompress, but he ended up breaking his leg and will now miss the remainder of the season.

The Bundesliga powerhouses, who are only four points ahead of the pack following a rocky first half of the season, will suffer a severe loss with the unavailability of the 36-year-old goalie.

Bayern Munich is currently in first place in the Bundesliga and has advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain on February 14.

The veteran goalkeeper is already reeling after Germany’s shocking early elimination from the World Cup in Qatar, so this is the latest terrible news for him.

Their victory over Costa Rica in the final group stage match was meaningless as a result of outcomes elsewhere since they lost to Japan and drew with Spain earlier.

Following their humiliating group-stage exit from the 2018 World Cup, the national team has now played poorly in successive World Cups.

Only a month ago did the goalkeeper make the surprising admission that he had skin cancer and had undergone three surgeries to treat it.

Neuer shared on Instagram that he had had skin cancer and has since purchased sunscreen with tennis player Angelique Kerber.

Neuer still carries the facial scar from his three surgeries to combat cancer.

The 36-year-old, who serves as the club captain for Bayern, has made 16 appearances this year despite the Bundesliga team having to deal with his absence for some time in October while Neuer was out with an injury.

Sven Ulreich, 34, took his position, and if Bayern decides not to sign Neuer’s replacement, Ulreich may be in line for a lengthy stint with the team.

Alexander Nubel’s future may be impacted by Neuer’s injury. The 26-year-old is presently on loan with Monaco but is unwilling to return and support Neuer from the sidelines after admitting he won’t return to Bayern as long as the seasoned goalkeeper is still the starter.
