Manchester United v Arsenal: Which Team Had The Better Season?

Arsenal started the season quite well with the tactics of Mikel Arteta who has been with the team for a couple of years now.

United on the other hand, hired Dutchman Erik Ten Hag to manage the team and he has shown a bit of experience in this period.

Though it might be viewed as a successful season for Manchester United, Bruno Fernandez has refused to tag it a successful one.

The United Midfielder claims that the season is far from successful despite United winning a trophy and securing a return to the Champions League.

“It’s a positive season, not successful because success is different for this club, and for us players it has to be too,” the Portuguese said.

“We did win a trophy. We got into the top four. Now we have another final but whatever happened in that final will not change anything about the season we have done,” Fernandez concluded.

Manchester United sealed a top-four finish ahead of Liverpool after they thrashed Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday night.

United under manager Erik Ten Hag has won the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford and might add the FA Cup if he beat Manchester City at Wembley in June.

It has been a decade since United last won the Premier League title and has also failed to go past the Champions League quarter-finals.

While the Red Devils have not returned to their old glory during the times of Sir Alex Ferguson, in comparison to Arsenal this season, they are most successful.

United beat Newcastle 2-0 to lift the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United are currently 17 points behind Champions City albeit a game in hand and the Dutch coach said his team have a lot of catching up to do.

No one would have thought that United would qualify for the Champions Lague spot ahead of next season after losing their first two games under Ten Hag to Brighton and Brentford.

Their woes worsened when they were humiliated by struggling Liverpool who thrashed them 7-0 at Anfield.

Arsenal on the other hand were making the headlines week in and week out as Mikel Arteta’s men kept surprising everyone.

Though the Gunners finished above United in the second place in their Premier League table, they bottled the league to Manchester City.

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta also blamed himself for the Gunners’ poor form towards the end of the current season.

They blew expectations out of the water for the vast majority of the campaign but lost their grip on the Premier League title.

With a run of just two wins in their last eight games in the league, Arsenal handed the trophy to Manchester City after they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners were leading with 11 points in the Premier League table in February with Manchester United nowhere to be found.

The two teams started the Premier League this season on a different note and this season they are ending it as same.

In the 2021/22 season, Arsenal finished in 5th place ahead of United in 6th place with a three goals difference.

But this season they are both finishing in 2nd and 3rd position respectfully with Arsenal leading with 11 points at the time of writing.

Manchester United’s best players in one picture.

If we look at the EPL finish in the last two seasons, we can say Arsenal is better off amongst the two of them.

Looking at stats from the two teams and how they have fared this season, Arsenal comes on top with a better performance index, as Arsenal have scored 83 goals while United have managed 56 goals so far.

Statistically, Arsenal have been better than Manchester United, the Red Devils only edge Arsenal in terms of defensive lines.

But in this piece, we are looking at their successes this season which is in regards to trophies won and finals played/to be played.

Manchester United have won the Carabao Cup and finished third in the Premier League this season – meaning they will play the Champions League next season.

In addition to that, United are in the FA Cup final and will face city rivals Manchester City at Wembley which they might win also.

Arsenal on the other hand, only qualified for the Champions League next season – which is a success for them – as they have not been to the competition since 2017.

Less impressively, Arsenal did not win any trophy this season despite playing in all major tournament bar the Champions League.

This brings us to the conclusion today that Manchester United have had a more successful season than Arsenal despite the Gunners finishing ahead of the Red Devils on the league table.
