Manchester United have reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Sergio Reguilon from the club.
Manchester United made a shock late transfer swoop for Sergio Reguilon as a replacement for Luke Shaw, who is set for a spell on the sideline following a muscle injury.
Before the shock swoop for Sergio Reguilon, United had a list of left-back targets across top leagues in Europe to replace Luke Shaw.
Argentina duo, Nicolas Tafiagliaco of Sevilla and Marcus Acuna of Lyon were also on the list of potential new recruits to fill the void at the left-back role at Old Trafford.
Erik Ten Hag is said to have been a top fan of the two left-backs due to to their style of play that fits into his defensive tactics and preferred attacking flair for his left-backs.
Another fast-rising Premier League star, Rico Henry, 26, also emerged as a top target for Manchester United. The highly-rated Brentford star was top on Ten Hag’s choice left-backs but United were certainly set to run into a barrage of hurdles trying to sign Henry on loan.
Henry started 37 Premier League matches for Brentford last season and had started the club’s opening three fixtures this season.
Brenford boss, Thomas Frank, considers Rico Henry key to his Brentford squad plan and was reportedly set to veto advances by Manchester United for the player.
Also, United were set to face the hurdle of pricing Rico Henry out of Brentford with a cheap loan offer as the player is contracted to the club till 2026.
With the obvious glitches set to weigh on the move, Manchester United opted for a loan move for Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella. Cucurella was an easy target for the Red Devils with Chelsea ready to part ways with the out-of-favor Spaniard on a loan move.
Cucurella was ready for the loan move as Manchester United opened talks for the player. However, glitches were also reported as negotiations continue. Manchester United reportedly wanted a ‘break clause’ to allow Manchester United call off the loan deal as early as January but Chelsea rejected the move.
With Cucurella loan deal nearing collapse, Manchester United immediately switched to Sergio Reguilon on deadline day.
United opened talks with Tottenham Hotspur immediately for Reguilon and were speedily progressing on negotiations before reports emerged Cucurella talks have finally collapsed amid talks with Spurs for Sergio Reguilon.
Cucurella’s collapsed loan deal coincided with Manchester United’s agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for Sergio Reguilon.
