The chairman of Manchester City, Khaldoon Al Mubarak has insisted that the club would replace the club’s legend Sergio Aguero who left the club to join FC Barcelona after scoring the club’s record 260 goals.

Though Sergio Aguero wanted to stay a bit longer at the Premier League club, the reigning Premier League champions felt the 32-year-old Argentine striker was surplus to requirement. Hence, his contract with the club which will expire on 30 June 2021, was not extended.

A day after Chelsea defeated Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League final in Porto, Portugal on May 29, Sergio Aguero flew to Barcelona to seal his free transfer to the Spanish club. He is expected to remain at the club for two seasons.

The departure of Aguero means that Manchester City have only one established striker in the person of Gabriel Jesus. Hence, the club is condemned to go for another top 9 ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

Recall that Manchester City used false 9 to execute most parts of the 2020-2021 season especially when Gabriel Jesus and Aguero were injured. The tactics helped them to win the Premier League title and the League Cup but failed to work against Chelsea in the Champions League final.

In regards to the need to strengthen the club’s attacking options, the chairman of Manchester City noted that the shoes of Aguero would be hard to fill but the shoes would be filled this summer.

He also disclosed that Manchester City would bring in some quality players to send a message to their rival clubs that they are not contented with their achievement in the just-concluded season.

“We lose a very important legend in Sergio Aguero, very hard shoes to fill but I am confident that we will find the right player to fill those shoes”, the Man City chairman told City’s TV.

“There are other areas within the team which need investment, not too many, it’s not about numbers it is about quality. I think the squad is phenomenal, you don’t win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final without that and we have it. We will bring quality into the squad in a couple of key positions.”

Manchester City are believed to be one of the clubs that invest a lot in terms of the development of their squad, especially under coach Pep Guardiola. Since 2016 when he became the coach of the Premier League side, the Spanish tactician has spent about a billion pounds in recruiting new players.

Despite the criticism that the huge investment has brought against Pep Guardiola, Manchester City would spend more according to the chairman of the club, Khaldoon Al Mubarak.

The businessman said he has the understanding that when a football club is at the top, such a club ought to spend more to keep the club at the top.

He said: “One of the things I have learned over the years is that you need to bring in talent into the team, refresh, and particularly when you are at a high level.

“Having won the league, it is not the time to sit back and be content, that would actually be your biggest mistake. This is how to send a strong message that there is no contentment, that you’re not satisfied with just winning the league.”
