Manchester City thrashed Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the Etihad to go top of the English Premier League.

Undefeated at the Etihad since November 2022, Pep Guardiola’s side returned to league action following an enthralling 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Having lost each of their last five games against the top six teams, the last thing Luton town needed was to fall behind in the first two minutes of the encounter.

But that was the unfortunate fate Luton town suffered as Erling Haaland acrobatically finished off Daiki Hashioka to give the citizens the lead. The goal was counted as an own goal.

Manchester City almost got their second goal through Matheus Nunes as his shot crashed against the base of Luton’s goal.

Ruben Dias curled a shot just past the Luton town post as the hour mark approached.

The Cityzens continued to dominate possession as Luton town was playing catch up, and City finally found their second goal through Mateo Kovacic’s sumptuous half-volley nestled into the back of the net.

Woodrow struck the crossbar from Fred Onyedinma’s cutback, but Luton Town had no tangible response.

With the contest virtually settled, Erling Haaland added a third after Jeremy Doku was brought down by Onyedinma.

Ross Barkley then gave his side a bit of hope by scoring a consolation goal. Meanwhile, Doku netted Manchester City’s fourth of the day before the scoring was wrapped up by Gvardiol adding gloss to the victory to make the score 5-1.

Manchester City ascend to the summit of the Premier League table following win over Luton Town

Anyway, this victory lifts Pep Guardiola’s side to the summit of the Premier League two points above title chasers Arsenal and Liverpool ahead of their Sunday, April 14, 2024, fixtures.

The Gunners welcome Aston Villa to the Emirates on Sunday, with the aim of returning to the summit of the log.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool battle against Crystal Palace, with the ambition of gaining ground in their push for the league crown.

However, Manchester City return to action on April 17, 2024, facing Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

The Cityzens are aiming to qualify to the last 4, as they look to defend their UEFA Champions League crown which they won during the 2022/23 season.

In the league, they return to action on April 25, 2024, facing Brighton and Hove Albion in a Matchday 29 affair.

Before the game against the Seagulls, Manchester City play against Chelsea in the semi-final of the English FA Cup.

The Cityzens also have their sights on reclaiming the FA Cup title, which they won during the 2022/23 season, defeating City rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the final.

It will be interesting to see how the remainder of matches goes this season for Manchester City.
