Manchester City Vs Southampton: Manchester City thrashed struggling Southampton 4-0 with Erling Haaland scoring the winning goal on Saturday afternoon, October 8, 2022.
After 20 minutes, Joao Cancelo scored with a powerful shot across goal, and Phil Foden doubled Man City’s advantage with a deft lift of the ball over Gavin Bazunu.
Riyad Mahrez connected with a beautiful Rodri dinked cross four minutes into the second half to increase the home team’s lead to three.
After missing numerous significant opportunities during the game, Haaland had to finally have his say. He completed a low-driven Cancelo cross with force to end any uncertainty about the outcome of the game. That marked Haaland’s 20th goal in all competitions and 15th Premier League goal for Manchester City so far this season.
The rest of the second half was dominated by City, and as the game came to an end, Southampton found it difficult to move out of their own half.
With the victory, City moved to the top of the standings, while Southampton is one point clear of the relegation zone after suffering their fourth straight loss.
Haaland entered the match in merciless form after scoring twice in the 5-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen and scored a hat-trick in last week’s 6-3 thrashing of Manchester United.
He missed his chance to start the scoring in the first half as he smacked a shot off the far post and watched the ball seep out of the net.
Later, in the second half, Haaland missed with a shot and timed a header poorly, but he was unstoppable and scored his 20th goal overall and 15th league goal of the year with a first-time shot after Cancelo’s cut-back.
Spanish fullback Cancelo, who was City’s most active player in the opening minutes of the game, took matters into his own hands in the 20th minute by firing a low shot into the goal after watching several of his crosses go awry.
Later in the first half, Foden added to their lead with a beautiful chip. The England midfielder had already scored three goals in the derby victory over United and has now scored four goals in the last two Premier League games.
Early in the second half, as City continued to play with Southampton, Mahrez volleyed in a chipped pass from Rodri to score the third goal.
Haaland was in danger of failing to score for City for the first time since the team’s 4-0 victory over Bournemouth on August 15, but he continued his remarkable goal streak and is now four games away from matching Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy’s record of 11 straight Premier League games with a goal dating back to 2015.
