Liverpool picked up the pieces late at Kenilworth Road to share the spoils with a spirited Luton Town team.
It was an entertaining evening of action, with both managers having a contrasting approach to the game.
The Reds would most likely have been looking to secure a comfortable victory over the Hatters, while Rob Edwards would have set up his side to frustrate Liverpool’s resolve.
Luton Town will be the more happier of the two teams, as they picked up a massive point in a game that many were expecting them to come away with any point whatsoever.
There were some half chances that fell majorly to Liverpool in the first 45, with Darwin Nunez trying to curl an effort at goal but it was parried wide by Luton’s goalie Thomas Kaminski.
In the 33rd minute, Ryan Gravenberch served the ball to Diogo Jota, with Jota directing an instant shot, however, Kaminski was once again on hand to deal with that one.
Meanwhile, the first yellow card in the game went to Marvelous Nakamba, for a reckless challenge at Mac Allister.
Players of Liverpool were requesting a stiffer punishment from the referee, but the referee shuts down those requests.
Both teams went into the break-level pegging, with neither the Reds nor the Hatters deserving to go in front.
The encounter was level at half-time
In the second 45, several chances fell by the way of both teams, and that resulted in a goal apiece for either side.
9 minutes following the restart of action, Alexis Mac Allister got his name into the referee’s book for a poor challenge on Andros Townsend.
In the 61st minute, Tahith Chong was brought on in place of Andros Townsend, and that substitution proved effective for Luton Town.
Chiedozie Ogbene became a handful for Liverpool defenders in the 65th minute, as a cross he sent into the area was blocked.
However, it fell to the path of forward Carlton Morris, nicely positioned, but Allison was equal to the task as he closed down the angle and made an important block to put it out for a corner.
Jurgen Klopp brought on Harvey Elliott for Dominik Szoboszlai in the 66th minute, with Cody Gakpo and Konstantinos Tsimikas also coming on for Diogo Jota and Joseph Gomez.
In the 73rd minute, Liverpool thought they had won a penalty, as Van Dijk was apparently brought down in the box by Tenden Mengi, however, the referee turned a blind eye to it.
A VAR review was also conducted and their decision also tallied with that of refre Andrew Madley.
Rob Edwards also introduced Elijah Adebayo for Carlton Morris in the 75th minute of proceedings.
Ryan Gravenberch also saw a massive chance in the 79th minute, firing a shot at Luton Town goalkeeper, Thomas Kaminski, at the near post.
In the 79th minute Jacob Brown was also sent into the fray for Chiedozie Ogbene, who has really troubled the Liverpool side.
Luton Town were staring at a victory against Liverpool
In the 80th minute, Tahith Chong took Luton Town into the lead, and it appeared like they were going to pick the important 3 points at Kenilworth Road.
With 7 minutes left to play in regulation time, Luis Diaz was brought on for Ryan Gravenberch.
Liverpool tried to huff and puff in dying embers of the game, and it appeared like their efforts was going to going to end in vain.
However, 5 minutes into 8 minutes of additional time, Luis Diaz brought Liverpool level and he had an emotional celebration, lifting his shirt to show a message for his missing dad.
His shirt carried a powerful message: “Freedom for my father.”
Luton Town after the 1-1 draw at Kenilworth road remain 17th on the log as Liverpool miss out on being second on the PL table pending the result between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea on Monday night, they remain fourth just above Arsenal.
Liverpool host Brentford in their next Premier League fixture ht before that they have an Europa league clash against Toulouse who guy thumped 5-1 in the reverse fixture.
Luton town on the other hand will continue their first ever PL campaign as they travel down to Manchester to face Manchester United on Saturday.
