Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has said he would like to follow the model Liverpool adopted to rebuilding a team and a club to be champions.
Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield in October 2015 when the club was 10th in the Premier League. But less than five years later, they have been the crowned the Premier League champions.
They will be welcoming the Reds to the Emirate Stadium as they hope to secure maximum points in their quest for at least European football next season, with Champions League qualification looking ton have eluded them.
While admitting that he is a big admirer of the work done by Klopp, the former Arsenal captain pointed out that one key area where they have done particularly well is their recruitment.
“What they have done is phenomenal. Obviously the first two years it took them some time to rebuild the squad and to create a new culture, a new philosophy and a game model that suited the coach.
“Then they started to recruit every single player in relation to what they needed and that’s where I think they were really smart. They bought with specificity for every position that was required.
“Financially they had a big backing and made some big signings which completely changed the club in my opinion,” he said at the zoom press conference ahead of tonight’s meeting.
Mikel Arteta will be happy to follow Liverpool’s path
When asked if Liverpool’s success gave him confidence that he can follow a similar path, Arteta said he is hoping Arsenal becomes like the Merseyside club in four years.
Liverpool garnered 92 points after beating Brighton. This point tally surpassed the 90 points Arsenal won the Premier League during the ‘Invincibles’ era.
“If you ask me that question in four years and we’re both sitting here and I can tell you ‘Yes, we’ve done it’, I will be so happy.
“But I know how many decisions have to be right and how much support you need from the club and the people around, and how much connection you to have to generate from your fans to have the full package, and afterward it’s football.”
