Jamie Carragher has admonished Chelsea on the need to halt their seemingly scattergun transfer policy.

Carragher urged players to also stop signing for the Stamford Bridge club, as it doesn’t appear to be an appealing destination for footballers.

His assertion is coming after Chelsea were reported to have struck a deal with Atletico Madrid to secure the services of Joao Felix, with Conor Gallagher moving in the opposite direction.

Jamie Carragher ranted that the primary reason why players would sign for the Blues is due to the financial security of having a lengthy contract at the club.

Carragher additionally expressed that players should back themselves to deliver at other top clubs and when their contract is due for a renewal, their pay package will ultimately be improved.

The Comments Of Jamie Carragher On Chelsea

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football program, the Liverpool great said: “Chelsea have just got to stop buying players and players have just got to stop signing for Chelsea.

“I don’t know why as a player I would look at that Chelsea project and think I would sign. The only reason you would sign is because your agent might say, “We’re getting a seven-year deal on big money. That’s guaranteed money for seven years”.

Jamie Carragher added: “You know what I would say? Back yourself as a player, sign a four-year deal at a proper club, and back yourself to do well. And then when you’re due for a renewal the money goes up anyway.”

His colleagues on the show then put to him that players might be interested in being part of Chelsea’s long-term project, but an apparently incensed Carragher responded: “Part of what?! It’s not a young and exciting team!”

Jamie Carragher Questions Why Chelsea Signed Joao Felix Alongside Where He Would Play

The 46-year-old also questioned the rationale behind the signing of Joao Felix, asking where the Portuguese would function in Chelsea’s starting XI.

Jamie Carragher’s inquisitiveness continued with him questioning where players like Enzo Fernandez and Christopher Nkunku would play.

He said: “Joao Felix. Tell me, where is he going to play. They signed [Pedro] Neto a week ago, they’ve already got Cole Palmer.

“Where are you going to play Enzo Fernandez, a £100million player who plays at No.10? Where are you going to play [Christopher] Nkunku?”

Cheekily, Carragher also enquired where Joao Felix was going to change at the training ground, as he wondered how a team of about 40 players would fit into one dressing room.

Jamie Carragher stated: “You’re asking where Joao Felix is going to play. Do you know what I want to ask you? Where is he getting changed at the training ground? I’m deadly serious.

“Where are these people [getting changed]? If you’ve got 40 players how are you all in one dressing room? How are you putting a training session on?”

Chelsea Since Todd Boehly Acquired The Club

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s transfer policy since Todd Boehly acquired the club in 2022 has been heavily criticized, with about 44 players signed for over £1.2 billion.

Despite the money spent, just a handful of players have managed to deliver the goods, and it has not been commensurate with the club’s performance on the pitch of play.

The Stamford Bridge side ended the 2022/23 campaign in 12th position, concluding the campaign trophyless and not gaining qualification to any European competition.

They had a wishy-washy 2023/24 season, although finished in 6th position and appeared to have sealed qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

However, following Manchester United’s triumph in the FA Cup final, they were downgraded to the UEFA Conference League.

The Blues have a date with Swiss side Servette on Thursday, August 22, 2024, in the final qualification round of the Conference League.

Meanwhile, Chelsea commenced the 2024/25 Premier League season on a losing note, as they were beaten 2-0 by Premier League champions Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

This has led to their fans lamenting over the club’s state and are hoping for better fortunes in the coming matches.

The Blues return to league action on Sunday, August 25, 2024, facing Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.
