2021/22 UEFA Champions League runners-up, Liverpool are optimistic that they would land Benfica striker Darwin Nunez when the transfer window opens.

Liverpool’s top rivals Manchester United are also in the race to sign Darwin but the 6 times Champions League winners are certain that he would join them. But Manchester United have been the favorite to sign him since the arrival of their new manager Erik ten Hag.

Erik who plans to rejuvenate the Old Trafford team wants to add the top Uruguayan forward to his list of strikers ahead of next season.

The sudden involvement of Liverpool in the pursuit will make it difficult for Manchester United to sign Darwin. Many sources have reported that Liverpool have sealed the deal and it’s just a matter of time for it to be announced.

Darwin Nunez had an amazing season with Benfica after scoring 26 goals in 28 Primeira Liga appearances and 34 in all competitions.

A meeting has already been concluded between his reps and Liverpool where there was a broad agreement for him to move to Anfield next season.

According to his reps, Darwin’s favorite option is Liverpool and it’s because he wants to play Champions League football. Manchester United won’t be part of the Champions League competition next season after finishing 6th last season. Darwin also believes that Liverpool will give him the platform to challenge for the premier league title.

However, Benfica values Darwin Nunez for €100m plus €20m in add-ons and bonuses. But Liverpool is yet to reveal the amount they are willing to pay for the Uruguayan striker. Reports have it that the two sides are ready to come to an agreement very soon.

Liverpool is chasing Darwin Nunez because they see him as a perfect replacement for their forward, Sadio Mane who is heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Sadio Mane has revealed that he’s not ready to renew his current contract with the club which is just remaining one year. So adding Darwin Nunez will help them in challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Bayern Munich have made two offers for the Senegalese striker but Liverpool rejected them both. Mane is expected to join the Bundesliga champions once Liverpool accept their offer.

Apart from Liverpool and Manchester United, Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing Darwin Nunez. But they have been told about Liverpool’s position in the pursuit of the forward and it’s most likely the Spanish club won’t go for him again.
