Lisandro Martinez will go under the knife for the second time in less than a year on his broken metatarsal after suffering difficulty in his return from injury.
According to reports, the Argentine International will undergo surgery on Monday, 2nd of October as he’ll be out until next year.
Manchester United declared on Friday, 29th of September that the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will be on the sidelines for up to three months following a replication of the issues that ruled him out towards the end of last season.
Therefore, the former Ajax defender will have to go through the knife on his right foot in a bid to heal the injury once and for all.
Lisandro Martinez suffered the main injury in a Europa League match against Sevilla in April and was ruled out for eleven weeks.
The 25-year-old returned for a pre-season fast in a request to get healthy before playing on Man United’s pre-season tour of America and the beginning of four Premier League matches of the 2023/2024 campaign.
However, Lisandro Martinez suffered another setback on the same foot in a 3-1 loss to Arsenal in September and was forced to be subbed off in the second half of the match.
It is believed that the 25-year-old former Ajax player took analgesics to play in the successive matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich while further medical tests revealed on Thursday, 28th of September that the fracture has not been completely healed.
Speaking to reporters about Lisandro Martinez’s issue on Friday, head coach Erik ten Hag said; “We did a proper diagnosis, in Argentina as well, but now it came out that there was a problem. That’s very sad, for him and the team, because he was not 100 percent fit”.
“I think it was a big difference between the Licha Martinez in the last games and the Licha Martinez we have seen in the first season here”.
He added; “He will add to the team, a really strong contributor to our levels and if already one player drops a level, the team performance will be lower”.
Erik ten Hag is currently dealing with defensive problems at Manchester United as numerous first-team players including the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Sergio Reguilon are presently out due to injuries.
The Dutch manager was forced to use a defensive midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as a left defender with Raphael Varane pairing with Victor Lindelof in the middle of defense.
What’s next for Manchester United?
Following the team injury crisis, the Red Devils will lock horns with Galatasaray without some of the aforementioned first-team players on matchday 2 of the 2023/2024 UEFA Champions League campaign.
However, the Old Trafford outfit will be looking forward to seeing some crucial players get back on their feet before things get worse for the 20-time English Premier League winners.
