Lisandro Martinez is said to have dubbed his new Manchester United teammate Wout Weghorst ‘Bobo’ following the Dutch striker’s historic spat with Lionel Messi.

Argentina and Messi eliminated Weghorst’s Holland from the World Cup on penalties in a quarterfinal match that quickly descended into chaos.

Weghorst, who is presently on loan at Manchester United, entered the game with Holland trailing by two goals but scored a late brace to force overtime.

A large brawl that broke out before Weghorst’s goal and an iconic picture of Argentina’s players provoking their opponents after Lautaro Martinez’s winning penalty ruined the game.

Despite the fact that Messi had actually raced directly to Emi Martinez to thank him on his bravery, the Argentina captain was still deeply embroiled in the unfortunate incidents.

As Weghorst waited in the tunnel for Messi to shake his hand and ask for his shirt, – he was told: ‘Que miras bobo. Anda palla,’ which translates as: ‘What are you looking at, idiot? Clear off.’

The video clip later went viral as football fans talked about the lack of hospitality from a perceived humble player.

Messi had a new, ugly side, but Martinez still finds the humor in it, calling Weghorst “Bobo” ever since he arrived at Old Trafford, according to sources.

Despite the heartbreak from the World Cup, Weghorst does not mind the nickname because it is clear that no love has been lost.

‘I always give everything and I did the same in the quarter-final,’ he said in an interview with Dutch outlet De Telegraaf. ‘I fought against Messi and there were a few moments between us.’

‘I think he didn’t like it and that it surprised him. But I have a lot of respect for him. He is among the greatest of all time.’

Weghorst quipped that he was happy that Messi even knew his name once the World Cup drama had subsided.

Insisting that their altercation was the result of a miscommunication, Weghorst appeared to find humor in the incident with the future World Cup champion.

He went on:  ‘I wanted to show my respect for Messi after the game, but he didn’t want it.’

‘I think he was still angry with me. Oh well, I see it as a great compliment that he knows my name now. Then at least I did something right.’

Weghorst finished his loan agreement with Manchester United in January and will stay there through the end of the current campaign.

What Happened Between Messi And Wout Weghorst

Following their verbal altercation in their World Cup semi-final matchup, Wout Weghorst and the Argentine appeared to be at odds over Weghorst’s request for Lionel Messi’s shirt.

Argentina, led by Messi, advanced to the Qatari semifinals despite a contentious match.

The game went into extra time when the South American team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before being held back by two goals from Weghorst after he came off the bench.

Although Antonio Mateu Lahoz, the referee, had already issued 17 yellow cards, Argentina only eventually prevailed on penalties. At the conclusion of the game, tempers remained high, especially between Weghorst and Messi.

The Burnley failure expressed his “disappointment” when the seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or called the Dutch striker a “fool” in a post-game interview.

Esteban Edul, the person assigned to interview Messi after the game, has now verified what actually transpired.

He stated: “After the game, they were all bickering in the locker room, not just Messi. [Virgil] Van Dijk was falling out with [Nicolas] Otamendi.”

“It looked like a Lanus-Banfield or a Newell’s-Central, but it had more mouth because they were world stars. Most of Messi’s anger was about the penalty shoot-out, when the Dutch bothered the Argentines. The 19 [Weghorst] was waiting in the tunnel.”

“He [Weghorst] approached Messi and asked him for his shirt. It was from there that Leo started to warm up.”

“The Dutch player didn’t understand, he stopped and Messi insulted him. He insulted him much more before the start of the interview during which he was a little calmer.”

“He was so angry he didn’t look at me or listen to my questions. I asked him about his incredible pass for [Nahuel] Molina and he told me about Van Gaal, FIFA… I couldn’t ask him.”
