Lionel Messi has overtaken Cristiano Ronaldo for the most liked Instagram Post, thanks to Messi’s World Cup trophy post.

Lionel Messi

The PSG playmaker was the center of attention in a much-anticipated World Cup final clash against France.

He scored two goals and converted his penalty kick to crown his epic football career with the most coveted football trophy.

After the World Cup victory, Lionel Messi posted a picture of himself lifting the 18 Karat gold trophy on his Instagram page. The post has become the most-liked post by a sportsperson in history – overtaking Ronnie’s famous snap of the duo playing chess together.

Lionel Messi’s performance in the 2022 World Cup final against France will not be easily forgotten. His brace was a thorn in the flesh of the French team, who, for the first time in the tournament, trailed the Argentines twice before dragging the game to a penalty shootout – thanks to a hat-trick by Kylian Mbappe.

The Paris Saint-Germain star scored thrice to cancel out Angel Di Maria’s opener and Lionel Messi’s brace.

Despite Kylian Mbappe’s stunning display, Lionel Messi took the shine and won the hearts of many after he emerged victorious to have his hands on his first World Cup trophy and Argentina’s first in 36 years.

The former Barcelona playmaker and record Ballon d’Or winner will now script his name in the history books as arguably the greatest footballer ever.

Meanwhile, PSG is scampering for all means to retain him as his contract at the Ligue 1 giant nears expiration at the end of the 2022/23 football season.

While Lionel Messi has hit the zenith of his epic football career, flying high in Qatar 2022 World Cup, his closest rival Cristiano Ronaldo has witnessed a drastic upturn in his football career.

Cristiano Ronaldo fell out with Manchester United after a poor and abysmal performance under Erik Ten Hag.

His contract was terminated, bringing to an abrupt end his two years deal with the Old Trafford club.

At the 2022 World Cup, Ronaldo could not do more to breathe life into his dwindling football career. He also fell out with Portugal manager Fernandes Santos and was benched twice in the tournament.

Portugal subsequently crashed out of the tournament, losing to a less-fancied African side Morocco.

After crashing out of the tournament, a tearful Ronaldo headed off the pitch in anger in what appears to be his last World Cup appearance for Portugal.

He is currently without a club and is hoping to regain his footing in his football career by still playing in the European topflight.

In November, Cristiano Ronaldo posted a picture showing him and Messi playing a game of chess for a Louis Vuitton photoshoot.

The snap became the most-liked pic by a sportsperson with an incredible 41.9million clicks from fans.

But it has now fallen behind Messi’s latest collection of photos showing him posing with the World Cup trophy.

As of the time of writing this report, the post has hit over 55million likes in just two days after it was published.
