According to transfer agent Fabrizio Romano, the 35-year-old World Cup champion Lionel Messi has agreed on a verbal contract extension deal with PSG.

But both the player and the club will have another meeting to discuss the length of the deal and salary.

The Argentina maestro signed a two-year deal when he joined PSG from Barcelona last year.

Lionel Messi’s current deal with PSG was to expire at the end of this season while the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was free to talk to other clubs in January.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint Germain has been striving to keep hold of the 2022 World Cup winner for at least one season.

Neymar, Messi’s teammate at PSG, has congratulated the 2022 World Cup and Golden ball winner.

But the golden ball holder was instead focused on the Qatar World Cup with Argentina and refused to make any decision until the end of the tournament.

However, getting his hands on the biggest trophy of his career appears to have altered his mind and he is looking to extend his career in Europe for a couple of more years.

Messi’s new contract extension will keep the Argentine legend with the Ligue 1 champions PSG until at least the 2023-24 season.

However, the news of Lionel Messi extending his contract with PSG comes as a heartbreak to other clubs like Inter Miami and Barcelona who were in the run to sign the superstar.

The MLS club Inter Miami were reported to be linked with messi’s signature and were said to be in negotiations.

Barcelona was also reported to be closing in on a deal to finalize a dramatic return for the former Catalans superstar.

However, according to transfers expert, Romano, Messi has never entered dialogues with Barcelona and the potential move to the Spanish club collapsed before entering an advanced stage.

Despite that, the Catalans have not given up on reuniting with the World Cup hero, and they will strive to compete with the terms offered by PSG.

Meanwhile, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi believes that Messi is happy at PSG and that the Argentina superstar would gladly agree to a contract extension after the World Cup.

Al-Khelaifi said: “He’s very happy; you can see that with the national team,”
“So what we agreed together — that after the World Cup, sit down together”.

Lionel Messi has been more impressive in his second season at the Ligue1 club as he has recorded 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions so far this season.
