Leicester City have gained promotion to the Premier League after Leeds United were walloped by Queens Park Rangers.
The Foxes were utterly sublime in their last league fixture, as they humbled Southampton 5-0 on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, a victory that has proved crucial in seeing them secure one of the guaranteed tickets for the top flight.
Abdul Fatawu scored a brace on the night, with Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi and arrowhead Jamie Vardy also joining in on the scoring act.
Leicester City was relegated to the English Championship following a disastrous 2022/23 season, where they finished 18th on the log, with 34 points from 38 matches.
Leeds United’s near-costly Slip-Up could see them fail to gain promotion to the Premier League
Leeds United, who were relegated to the second tier last season, are also in an advantageous position to return to the top division.
However, they were smashed by Queens Park Rangers 4-0 on April 26, 2024, a game that has put a minor dent on their chances, with Ipswich Town in and around the corner for the final automatic spot, which they currently have within their grasp.
Interestingly, Southampton also fell to the Championship following their outing in the 2022/23 Premier League season, where they finished bottom of the log with 25 points from 38 matches.
The Saints, who were pummeled by Leicester City will be trying everything they can to see that they join Leicester City and possibly Leeds United or Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
They will likely have to do it in a seemingly arduous manner via the playoffs, and it will be fascinating to see if they can battle through and come out unscathed.
Enzo Maresca on his side’s scorching win over Southampton
Speaking after the clash against Southampton, Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca lauded his side for their mesmeric display he said:
“I don’t think that was the best performance of the season, but the performance was fantastic, very good on and off the ball.
“We could have been better on the ball, but we are all very happy because the opposition are a fantastic team.”
Maresca then added that his side would need just one more victory to book their place in the Premier League for next season, happily for him, that is inconsequential now, as Leeds United’s defeat meant they were through to one of the best leagues in the world.
Enzo Maresca added: “The good thing about tonight is that now we know that with one win we get promoted.”
The Foxes have two games left to play this term, away at Preston North End on Monday, April 29, 2024.
They follow that up with a home game against Blackburn Rovers, with victory in their last 2 culminating matches seeing them end as Champions of the English Championship this season.
Leicester City are previous winners of the English Premier League title, having achieved a miracle in the 2015/16 season under the stewardship of former gaffer Claudio Ranieri.
