Bayer Leverkusen are the only club in Europe’s top five to remain unbeaten in all competitions in the 2023/2024 campaign.

The current German Bundesliga champions have extended their European record to 45 games without a defeat at the time of writing this article.

However, during their last outing in the Bundesliga, Xabi Alonso’s men were on the verge of tasting their first defeat of the season before Josip Stanisic’s last-gasp incredible strike secured a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

How Bayer Leverkusen started their unbeaten journey

Alonso’s side reached the 40-game unbeaten streak with their DFB Cup semi-final victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf, before equalling the Bundesliga record for the longest unbeaten start to a League campaign with victory away to Union Berlin on April 6, 2024.

The Bundesliga outfit then set a new best record in Germany’s top flight on Sunday, April 14, following a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen that also saw the club crowned champions for the first time in their history.

That result also took Leverkusen level with Italian side, Juventus, for the longest undefeated run by a team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

The 2024 Bundesliga champions subsequently pushed their record to 44th game unbeaten as they drew 1-1 against West Ham United to book a place in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

Leverkusen’s streak was seconds from being broken against Dortmund on Sunday, April 21 when Josip Stanisic equalized in the seventh minute of added time to make it 45 competitive games without a defeat.

The Bundesliga outfit have won an incredible 38 out of those 45 matches, being held to a draw on only seven occasions and failing to score just once (against Borussia Monchengladbach on January 27, 2024).

Bayer Leverkusen’s remaining fixtures

Potentially, Bayer Leverkusen have eight games left in all competitions to record the first unbeaten campaign in the history of the German top flight.

There will be four more matches in the Bundesliga as well with a two-legged Europa League semi-final clash with Roma and the DFB Cup final against Kaiserslautern on 25 May.

A potential Europa League final against Marseille or Atalanta in Dublin on May 22, 2024, would make it 53 competitive games in 2023/24.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen of 2023-24 stand on the brink of greatness with the aforementioned matches theoretically between them and a record undefeated season for a top-five European League team.

Should their record stay unblemished across their remaining fixtures in all three competitions (Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and UEFA Europa League) they will become the first side to go a full season undefeated both domestically and in European competition.

Therefore, the question at the heart of all football fans across the globe is, will Bayer Leverkusen manage to go the whole season unbeaten?
