PSG talisman, Kylian Mbappe, hit another landmark in his football career as he sets a new record during Euro 2024 qualifiers against Greece.

Kylian Mbappe starred as France saw off the hard-fighting Greeks to secure a narrow win and maintain their perfect campaign in the competition.

The first half ended goalless as France failed to water down a resilient Greek backline. In the 55th minute, Kylian Mbappe came to the rescue as he scored a penalty to give France the lead.

The goal turned out to be a match-winner with the PSG forward setting a fresh record with France national team, becoming the highest-scoring French footballer in a single season

Kylian Mbappe went into the game against Greece after another great season with PSG. He was French Ligue 1 top scorer with 28 goals. He won the 2022/23 Ligue 1 Golden Boot in style, also bagging French Ligue 1 Player of the Season award for the fourth time in a row. He smashed the record set by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who won the award three consecutive times at PSG.

Kylian Mbappe had 41 goals in all competitions for PSG. He recorded 29 Ligue 1 goals to win the Golden Boot Award. He scored 7 Champions League goals in 8 matches before PSG crashed out of the competition after losing to Bayern Munich.

He also recorded 5 goals in a single French Cup appearance for PSG.

With France national team this season, Kylian Mbappe recorded 9 goals in the World Cup and 3 goals in Euro 2024 qualifiers to take his tally with the Les Bleus to 12 goals before the game against Greece.

Against Greece, Mbappe was tied with France football icon, Just Fontaine, on the number of goals for club and country in a single season as both shared 53 goals for both club and country.

Just Fontaine held the record for France top scorer in club and international football in a single season before Kylian Mbappe’s penalty goal Vs Greece

Mbappe needed just a goal to demolish the record and set a new benchmark and he achieved it by converting a spot-kick to give France the winner. It was his 54th strike in 70 appearances for Les Bleus.

He also clinched the MOTM award to cap his standout performance for Les Bleus in the game.

The PSG talisman will hope to extend the record-breaking 54-goal tally in subsequent round of matches in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Despite a stunning season with PSG and France national team, it is not all rosey for the French star at PSG. Mbappe is reportedly eyeing a move away from the club when his contract expires in 2024.

He has submitted an exit letter to the club confirming his decision not to renew his contract next season – a move that angered the club’s hierarchy.

PSG are belligerent on their decision after the exit letter. They want him to sign a new contract this summer or be sold immediately.

Mbappe has been linked to a move to Real Madrid after he turned down the club in 2021 to sign a new contract with PSG in 2022.
