The points ranking for the 2024 Kopa Trophy has been revealed, and the disparity in the numbers is puzzling.
Lamine Yamal claimed the 2024 Kopa Trophy on October 28, 2024, following an impressive 2023/24 season for Barcelona, cumulated with a UEFA European Championship triumph with Spain.
However, the margin at which Yamal used to claim the coveted individual prize looks to have fascinated many football enthusiasts.
Several Bright Youngsters Received Just 3 Points
Paris Saint Germain’s Warren Zaire-Emery received 3 points in the voting alongside Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel, who also garnered the same number of points.
Red Bull Salzburg’s forward Karim Konate also got 3 points alongside Manchester United attacking prodigy Alejandro Garnacho.
Former Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, who currently plies his trade with Paris Saint Germain and represents the national team of Portugal also amassed 6 points in the rankings.
Barcelona’s teenage sensation Pau Cubarsi was heaped with 8 points, a huge 11-point disparity from Savinho (19), who finished in 4th position on the rankings.
Moreover, Manchester United and England star Kobbie Mainoo recorded 20 points and it earned him a 3rd-place placement.
Arda Guler, who finished second in the rankings, received 6 points more than Kobbie Mainoo.
Huge Disparity Between Arda Guler And Lamine Yamal
Guler was handed 26 points but there is a huge gulf in points between him and Lamine Yamal of Barcelona.
Staggeringly, Yamal had 87 points more than the Turkey and Real Madrid youngster, as he was the popular choice for many voters.
Lamine Yamal picked up an overwhelming 113 points and that certainly was more than enough to hand him the coveted individual prize.
The Spain international has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in 67 appearances for Barcelona since making his debut for the club in April 2023.
Internationally, Yamal has made 17 appearances for Spain, scoring 3 goals and providing 9 assists.
Kopa Trophy
The Kopa Trophy is an association football award presented to the best-performing player worldwide under the age of 21 during a joint ceremony with the Ballon d’Or.
The award is presented by France Football and is named after the late French footballer Raymond Kopa, the winner of the 1958 Ballon d’Or.
It was first awarded in December 2018 in Paris, France, where the Ballon d’Or award ceremony regularly goes down.
The winner is selected by a jury of all former Ballon d’Or winners. The Kopa Trophy is also open to top players outside of the UEFA leagues, unlike the Golden Boy Award, which is European-based only.
