Karim Adeyemi is set to miss a second leg round 16 Champions League tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after picking up an injury against Hertha Berlin.
Adeyemi picked up a muscle injury in RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga win against Hertha Berlin on Sunday, with the club confirming he may likely miss the crunch tie against Chelsea.
Karim Adeyemi starred in Borussia Dortmund’s first leg win over Chelsea at Signal Iduna Park. The Germany international scored Dortmund’s winner after picking up a run right from his own half into the Chelsea box before firing in the winner.
Speaking after his match winner when asked about his incredible speed and pace, Karim Adeyemi said he has good genetics and also eat a lot of “Fufu” – a Nigerian delicacy – which makes him run fast.
Against Hertha Berlin, Adeyemi continued in his prolific form for Borussia Dortmund. He scored and also assisted a goal before being forced to limped off the pitch in tears following a muscle injury.
Borussia Dortmund confirmed Adeyemi’s injury in a club statement which reads:
“Borussia Dortmund’s attacking player Karim Adeyemi sustained torn muscle fibres in the home game against Hertha BSC (4-1) on Sunday.
“He will be unavailable for the team for approximately three weeks.”
The “approximately three weeks” timeline set for Karim Adeyemi’s return means the 21-year-old will likely miss the return leg of Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The German giants will be heading to the London club on March 7, which falls within the three weeks timeline set by the club for Karim Adeyemi’s return from injury.
Meanwhile, the club will be hoping to consolidate on their narrow 1-0 advantage when travelling to Stamford Bridge. A win or draw will see the club book a quarterfinal ticket.
Another promising star set to replace Karim Adeyemi
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund have already lineup another prolific youngster in the place of Karim Adeyemi.
After picking the knock against Hertha Berlin, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was immediately subbed on to replace Adeyemi, and he is tipped to likely make his Champions League debut against Chelsea following Adeyemi’s injury.
Bynoe-Gittens has been regarded as another “Jadon Sancho” with great talent. He is an English winger and had joined Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City.
He has been mainly used as a sub but has scored three times for Borussia Dortmund this season.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens may return to England in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League squad if Karim Adeyemi is sidelined for three weeks as projected by the German club.
Meanwhile, Karim Adeyemi’s injury is a temporarily setback to his Borussia Dortmund career which has been gathering pace.
This season, Adeyemi has scored in all competitons for Borussia Dortmund – the Champions League, Bundesliga, and the DFB-Pokal.
He has three Bundesliga goals, two Champions League goals, and one DFB-Pokal goal in all his 24 appearances for the club.
