Jose Becker, the father of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker and Fluminense goalkeeper Muriel Gustavo Becker drowned in Brazil on Wednesday according to a police report.
Jose Becker was said to be swimming in a lake located at his holiday home in the southern region of Brazil when he drowned. The 57-year-old father of two was first declared missing at 5 PM on Wednesday before his dead body was discovered later that same day.
According to a police statement, Jose Becker’s body was discovered at 11:59 pm local time on Wednesday by fire service operatives who joined in the search for the body. Local authorities say the death of Alisson’s father was not suspected to be a murder case.
Though no much is known about the private life of Jose Becker, it was confirmed that he attempted to have a career in football but ended up as an amateur goalkeeper who represented a Brazilian side the Rio Grande do Sul.
Since he couldn’t make it out as a football star, he influenced his two sons, Alisson and Muriel to take up a career in the game of football. The two men started their development in the game at a Brazilian club Internacional.
After years of training and playing for Internacional, Muriel moved to Europe to keep for a Portuguese club Belenenses. Afterward, the 34-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper returned to Brazil in 2019 to keep for Fluminense.
While his younger brother, Alisson went to an Italian club, Roma where he played for two years before he joined Liverpool in 2018. A few months after, the 28-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper won almost everything in club football with Liverpool within two years.
Unlike Alisson who has represented Brazil at all levels and currently the country’s first-choice goalkeeper, his elder brother got a couple of caps with the Brazil under-20 team before he continued to concentrate on club football.
When the police announced the death of Jose Becker, his children former club, Internacional issued a statement to console the late goalkeeper’s family.
“It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker’s death, the father of our ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel,” the club wrote.
“Clube do Povo wishes strength to family and friends in this moment of so much pain.”
While Sao Paolo FC tweeted: “With much regret, São Paulo FC receives the sad news of the death of José Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel.
“Our condolences and solidarity with the two athletes and their families. A lot of strength and a lot of light at this point.”
