Jesse Marsch, Leeds United Coach is well-versed in the world of romance, despite the possibility that his wife Kim would disagree.
Little did the Leeds manager’s wife Kim know that their date would take place at Accrington’s Wham Stadium on a rainy and windy night.
It was pies and pints in the foothills of the Pennine mountains instead of exquisite meals and cocktails at a posh city center restaurant.
Mrs. Marsch was treated to the cozy charms of the Wham Stadium as Stanley narrowly defeated Boreham Wood in their rematch after extra time to secure a visit from the struggling Premier League team in the fourth round.
The Wham serves a variety of Pukka pies for £2.80 and even Pot Noodles for £1.80.
Marsch admits that she felt a little bad about portraying the scouting trip as a special dinner for two, but she stands by the kind reception they received from their League One hosts.
However, he anticipates a less friendly afternoon as his team attempts to prevent an FA Cup giant-killer.
The American confirmed that: “I suppose it’s how us coaches manage to find date nights. You take your wife to the match.”
“We went along and met their owner Andy Holt and managing director Dave Burgess.”
“We sat with them and they were both very gracious and welcoming. Quite rightly, they have a lot of pride in what they’ve built there.”
By preventing Accy from advancing to round five for the first time in their history, Marsch was able to get a wealth of insider knowledge on how to avoid a tricky possible banana skin in front of the live TV cameras.
In his 12-season coaching tenure, the 49-year-old has never suffered a defeat to a lower-league team.
He also added: “I think it’s always important when you play at a lower division team to go and see what kind of environment and match atmosphere they have.”
“Accrington have a lot of pride in their pitch and the crowd generates a good atmosphere. Their team competes hard and you can see they care a lot about winning.”
“They value the FA Cup and as a team they specialise in set-pieces and throw-ins.”
“I think they’ll play a lot of long balls, defend hard and play direct against us.”
Leeds, who are taking a well-deserved holiday from their fight for Premier League survival, have only won one of their last nine games, a 5-2 thrashing of Cardiff in a third-round replay.
They fought tooth and nail to keep Accrington from joining teams like Histon, Rochdale, Sutton, and Crawley in booting them out of the Cup in previous years. Leeds United succeeded in beating Accrington 3-1 earlier on Saturday, January 28.
Georginio Rutter, a £25 million acquisition, will likely make his debut, while captain Liam Cooper and midfielder Tyler Adams are both anticipated to miss out due to injuries.
