Borussia Dortmund youngster and England international Jadon Sancho has described the €10,000 fine Germany Bundesliga governing body (DFL) slammed on him and his teammate Manuel Akanji, as an “absolute joke”.
The fine is a punishment for breaching “general hygiene” protocols of the DFL. They breached the law by inviting a barber to their different apartments to have a haircut without wearing any personal protective equipment (PPE) amid coronavirus pandemic.
In reaction to the fine, Jadon Sancho took to Twitter and tweeted: “Absolute joke DFL!”, but later deleted the tweet when it has already gone viral and could attract additional punishment to the 20-year-old Englishman.
A statement from DFL said: “The DFL has fined Manuel Akanji and Jadon Sancho.
“The players from Borussia Dortmund had obviously violated general hygiene and infection protection standards at home hairdressing appointments and in particular the medical-organisational concept of the DFL task force.
“There is no question that professional footballers also have to have their hair cut. However, this currently has to be done in accordance with the medical-organisational concept.”
Recall that German Bundesliga was allowed to restart two weeks ago after about three months of no action due to coronavirus pandemic. Though matches have been going on smoothly in the league, the matches are played under stringent protocols in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
This is the first time in the flourishing career of Jadon Sancho that he has gotten himself involved in such a controversy. Though when the season restarted in Germany weeks ago, he came under serious criticism for not being disciplined enough.
This criticism was connected to how he resumed team training looking chubby. His unfit look made him start the first set of matches from the bench. However, he had the opportunity of starting a match during the week and he didn’t disappoint as he scored his first career hat-trick.
Sancho has scored 17 goals in 27 Bundesliga appearances in 2019-2020 season, his best-ever tally in a single season. The winger has also registered 17 assists, leaving him with an incredible record of a goal or assist every 62.3 minutes in the league.
