Casillas has declared in a controversial tweet that he is gay, saying he hopes to be respected.

The tweet attracted reactions from top ex-football stars who flooded the account with messages of solidarity and support.

Among those who reacted to the tweet was Ex-Barcelona and La Liga defender Carles Puyol.

Puyol simply wrote, “Iker, it is time to tell our story.” He added a heart and love emojis to the post.

A few hours after the post, Iker Casillas took down the Twitter post, claiming his account was hacked.

He apologized to the LGBT community and all his followers.

Casillas wrote, “Hacked account. Luckily everything is in order. Apologies to all my followers. And, of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.”

Puyol also responded to Iker Casillas’s new tweet about the hacked account.

Puyol admitted that he was joking with his previous tweet when his former Spain teammate posted the gay tweet. He also apologized for the “sensitivities hurt in the process, also declining his support for the gay community.

Puyol wrote: “I have made a mistake. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no bad intentions and totally out of place. I understand that it may have hurt sensitivities. All my respect and support for the LGTBIQA+ community.”

While Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol struggled to clear the air of mistrust sweeping across the LGBT community after the whole incident, Josh Cavallo, Adelaide left-back, has had his ox gored already by the tweet.

Cavallo blasted Casillas and Carles Puyol for such an expensive joke, “hurting the sensitivities of the LGBT community.”

Cavallo had, in October, come out openly to declare that he is gay after struggling to lead a double life for years.

The 22-year-old courageously took to his social media handle to declare his status as a gay footballer. He wrote on his social media page;

“tired of living a “double life. I’m a footballer and I’m gay. All I want to do is play football and be treated equally.

“I’m tired of trying to perform at the best of your ability and to live this double life, it’s exhausting.

“I thought that people would think of me differently when they found out. They would start treating me differently.

“They would start saying bad things about me or making fun out of me. That’s not the case. If anything, you would earn more respect from people.”

Obviously, Iker Casillas’s post proved difficult for the Australian defender to bear despite the former claiming afterward that his account was hacked.

Who is Josh Cavallo?
