Gavi is the third player for FC Barcelona to win the Golden Boy award. In 2005, it was Leo Messi, and in 2021, it was Pedri, and in 2022, Gavi took the award.
Gavi’s triumph in the 2022 edition of the Golden Boy award makes FC Barcelona the first club in the history of the award to have three winners.
Gavi, like Pedri the year before, has accomplished a Kopa-Golden Boy double and can now party like it’s 1999. Two precious gems that we’re very fortunate to have on Spotify’s Camp Nou.
Gavi, a midfielder for Barcelona and the Spanish national team, won the Golden Boy award for 2022 to go along with the Kopa Trophy he received at the 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony this week.
Gavi’s debut season on the largest platform was successful after his spectacular ascent to fame a year ago for both club and country.
He was one of 10 candidates from Premier League clubs, but he beat off Jude Bellingham, Jamal Musiala, and Eduardo Camavinga to win.
Pedri, a midfielder for Barcelona, won the prize last year; Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Wayne Rooney are among the previous recipients.
The Italian sports publication Tuttosport created the Golden Boy award in 2003, and since then, sports journalists from all across Europe have voted to determine the winner.
Each juror can propose five candidates; the one they find most impressive will receive ten points; the next most impressive will receive seven; the third most impressive will receive five; the fourth most impressive will receive three, and the fifth most impressive will receive one.
Starting his youth career with Real Betis, Gavi moved to Barcelona in 2015 at the age of 11.
He worked his way up through La Masia’s youth programs and eventually made his professional debut for Barcelona’s first squad in the early stages of the 2021-22 season, under Ronald Koeman’s management.
At the young age of 18, he has become an indispensable member of the Blaugrana, having already made 61 appearances for the first squad. Along with fellow teen sensation Pedri, he is one of the first names on Xavi Hernandez’s squad sheet and a preferred option to Frenkie de Jong.
Gavi has become a mainstay for the Spain national team, where he has earned 12 caps and is highly regarded by manager Luis Enrique. Similarly to his success with the club, he has beaten out several more seasoned and capable competitors to secure this job.
Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott and Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, who is on loan to Sunderland for the season, were among the Premier League’s award candidates. However, Gavi emerged victorious, adding this honor to the Kopa Trophy he had already received earlier in the week. He is scheduled to attend a ceremony in Turin on November 7 to receive the award.
