France claimed their greatest-ever victory after they thrashed Gibraltar 14-0 in their Euro 2024 qualifiers on Saturday with Kylian Mbappe bagging a hattrick in the match.
Surprisingly, Didier Deschamp’s side made history by scoring seven first-half goals from seven different scorers, before adding another seven in the second 45 minutes.
It just took three minutes for Deschamps’ men to score, when Gibraltar defender Ethan Santos tossed the ball into his own net to give the hosts the lead.
Marcus Thuram extended their lead a minute later, before debutant Warren Zaire-Emery made French football history by scoring in the 16th minute of the game.
Starting the game, the PSG teenager became the youngest post-war international to play for France, and it only took him 16 minutes to become the country’s youngest-ever goal-scorer.
Though the teenager became the youngest goalscorer for France, he did not finish the match as he was forced off after just 20 minutes in his debut match for the country.
However, that did not stop Deschamp’s men from making it 4 from the penalty spot with Kylian Mbappe scoring his first of the match against the visitors.
Things went from bad to worse for Gibraltar after the unfortunate Santos was then shown a red card in the match and that gave Les Blues every room to thrash them.
The 2018 World Cup winners scored three goals in for first-half minutes with goals from Johnathan Clauss, Kingsley Coman, and substitute Youssouf Fofana.
France ended the first half with 7 goals scored from seven different goalscorers, which is the first time the country has had such or even won a first-half with such a goal margin.
France continued their blood-letting in the second half with Gibraltar unable to stem the tide and Deschamp’s men added another seven goals to make it 14 at full-time.
Coman scored his second goal two minutes later, before captain Mbappe added two more to complete his hat-trick, and Olivier Giroud arrived late with two goals in two minutes.
Giroud, who is France’s all-time leading goal-scorer, scored his opening goal just one minute before normal time, and the AC Milan striker increased his tally in the first minute of injury time.
Gibraltar is currently in last place in the group with a goal difference of a staggering minus 35, while France is in first place with 26 with 21 points from 7 games.
